The Fuzz Thread

Curious to hear folks' experiences with the Fuzz Master General. I'm considering snagging one up before they discontinue it again, and octave fuzz is my favourite fuzz. Does it offer something that a superfuzz clone or a Green Ringer clone cannot cover?

Yes, but the difference lays in the 3rd clipping option (toggle in middle position) that covers a very different ground than the Ge and Si modes.

I currently own the following SF family members:

- Tru-Fi Super Fuzz V1
- Idiotbox Ron Fuckin' Swanson
- Danelectro Eisenhower
- PedalPCB Fuzz Cadet (EQD FMG clone)
- EQD Fuzz Master General Legacy RI

The Tru-Fi is a nice and faithful clone and has the octave balance trimmer. Slightly noisy, but I guess that's just like the Univox. If you want authentic but aren't forking out 1k on Reverb, this is the one to get.

The Idiotbox is in the ballpark, is a tad less noisy, yet also less refined and not sounding as "big". Not that listeners would notice though. Nicely tuned, but doesn't have the trim pot. 100% obsolete ever since I got the Tru-Fi.

The Danelectro (FZ-2 based with bass/treble knobs) is a cool surprise, nowhere near as cheap-sounding as I expected. Sounds huge and is versatile.

The PedalPCB clone of the FMG goes 99% of the way, but when you A/B them there's a difference, although very minor. Maybe to do with parts selection? Not bad at all, though.

The EQD Legacy Reissue is highly similar to the PedalPCB, but just sounds a wee little bit nicer to my ears (tone is in the branding?). Slightly more of the typical SF sag in Si mode than the PedalPCB, and the op-amp clipping is definitely cleaner and responds more like a ring mod with the right settings. The Flexi Switch is a fun addition over the original FMG.

Anyhow, I do like them all, but the EQD got the final spot on my board. If I got to keep only two, it'd be the EQD in first place and then I'd have a real hard time picking between the Tru-Fi and the Danelectro.

And I'll be giving the Idiotbox to a good buddy for his birthday this month. It was my entry ticket to the world of Super Fuzz, and he's also a huge pedal nerd but hasn't played a SF so far (loves his Carcosa, Fuzz Factory and various Rats tho), so it's time for a rite of initiation... 😁❤️

EDIT: The Tru-Fi and Idiotbox don't like being placed after a buffer. Not as bad as a Tone Bender or Ge FF. They're still enjoyable, but they do react to impedance changes. The others I'm not so sure about. Probably not as much.

Thank you for such a detailed response! I have a DeadFX I Can't Feel My Face Super Fuzz, which I absolutely love and which plays very well with buffers/other pedals in front of it, but I also have a Fuzzdog SF clone that I use on my "other" board and a EQD Tentacles that I have as the first pedal on my board so that I can add an analogue octaev up for any and all flavour of gain. If the EQD does the Green Ringer thing AND the SF thing well enough, I could potentially replace both pedals with that and open up a spot for something else (of course, another fuzz!). Might look into this further and go through some demos now...

This red one arrived from Warm Audio in Austin Texas earlier this morning .👌

My Warm Bender broke. The replacement they sent me didn't work. They returned the previous item instead of replacing it with a new one. Depression. Bugger fuzzes. One day, when I'm a better guitarist and have more money I'll buy a decent Tone Bender from someone.

This is like the happy meal toy of fuzz pedals. I got one for 12 bucks or something. It is actually really cool for the money but I always feel like I’m going to break it. I always wanted to rehouse it but probably more trouble than it’s worth when I could just build a clone kit. Literally the only Behringturd product I will ever own.

Strange they are built like tanks😳
Who did you buy it from ?
I bought them from a local supplier. Fortunately, they've been very helpful and I got my money back.

I checked on Amazon and was surprised to see they sent Warm Benders here - usually pedals (and other electronic stuff) can't be imported. So I've ordered one and I'm keeping every digit crossed.

I'm really hoping it works because it's an amazing pedal. I haven't seen any general complaints of poor quality, so I've just had just bad luck. If it doesn't work this time I'll look into that JDM.

Finally got my EJ Fuzz Face sounding decent!!

Makes sense you'd have to dime a Marshall for it to work, but it fills in all the mids compresses the tone in a way that makes it manageable. I can play this like any other lead tone, rather than altering my picking to adapt to the fuzz. I used the Treble channel of the '59 SPL in the AxeFX -

Marshalls should come with a Fuzz Face in the box.

It was kinda cool; I loaded up that Plexi and the Gain was around 5, I had the Fuzz Face on and started turning that gain knob up and you could just hear everything ‘fill in’ the FF almost like a balloon being inflated. Doesn’t really help me with my own rig as I keep the Plexi50 with the volume around 3.5-4, but now that I know it can be obtained by cranking the power section of a Marshall, I just need to figure out which pedal will provide that for me so I can run it into my non-cranked Marshall. :rofl

Run your fuzz into an OD into your plexi. The OD volume control can keep things from getting too loud.

I use my amps (and models) as a clean platform, and I never use my fuzzes without an overdrive after. I can’t go back to fuzz without overdrive now.

That’s what I was doing last night, putting the NOTADUMBLE in and out of the path. I’ll probably be rather picky about it because it’s REALLY touch sensitive and just a pinch too much from the OD after the fuzz can make those initial transients papery/messy sounding. I’m definitely going to pursue this route, though.

Klones are great after a FF. The buffer brightens them up a bit even when the pedal is off.
