Can a Plexi do metal?

It sounds freaking awesome. Really nice job on the tone and man… I dig the playing and style too. Modern Sabbath meets Something. Maybe Drew?

I was actually thinking Sabbath when it first fell out of my fingers, too! Kinda the Cantrell/Down vibe that all came from Iommi. I’m really enjoying the tone, it’s got pretty much everything I want in a high gain tone.

@DrewJD82 are you rocking the V1 or the V2? I didn't realize these were as affordable as they are.

EDIT - I guess the V1 is no longer available so assuming V2.

I think this a little funny, in that I've often used non-marshall amps... But at the end of the day, typically end up trying to get close to what a good Marshall tone sounds like in my head :)

It especially happens to me with most Friedman amps. By the time I've set them up to sound like I want, it's very close to my favourite Marshall tones, just not quite as good.

The thing that really gets you with the Superlead in particular is that it is so responsive and covers so much ground competently. There are almost infinite awesome variations you can get using a strat and various pedals. Then when you're bored of that, you grab a Les Paul and boom...a whole other world of tones. You can authentically cover like 50+ years of rock music with one amp, 2 guitars, and maybe a boost.

There is a reason you still see them in so many studios and on so many stages.

Yep, the V2. It came with the amp and the other day was the first time I really turned it on after the first day. I’d love to have it selectable via footswitch or some way to switch it live without keeping the back of the amp opened up. It also has the Bass boost that I haven’t even tried because I haven’t found any lacking in low end in this amp, I rarely turn the Bass knob above 4.

Now that I think of it, to me the tone of the OP reminds me of vintage avenged sevenfold.

I think those dudes were mostly using Mesa’s and Uberschalls in their earlier years. I know after their 3rd album they were pissed Bogner wouldn’t hook ‘em up with an endorsement so they talked a bunch of shit about Bogner amps for a brief period. :rofl

Love a lot of their tunes but their tones have always been a point of gripe for me, just wish they had more balls, for pretty much the entire time they’ve been a band.

In the late 90’s I was busting a lot of balls when I’d see Mesa’s onstage, Blink182 and Sum41 are popping in my head but I know there were more as both those bands were using Mesa’s but had them dialed in like Marshalls.

That era Blink was most likely Tom’s Rectifer/JCM900 rig. There’s an extraordinary run of albums and artists from that era that were using a Recto/Marshall stereo setup. The first couple Tool records, Superunknown, Blink, Metallica, AFI, possibly some of the early AIC stuff.

It’s amazing how the Recto/Marshall thing works together. Especially with the Superlead it just fills in everything the Recto doesn’t have.

Recto and an OG 5150 is peak PB&J

This was always my go-to combo for recording metal stuff previously, but I predict the next few years will be a Mark-something and a boosted Marshall. Hell, if I didn’t already have a long love for Marks I’d be fully on the Marshall train right now. I’m curious what I’ll end up with first; a JCM800, SPL or a Mark-something.

I still want to snag a IIC+ before they reach unobtanium prices, but I can see myself getting frustrated with the pricing in general and just say “Fuck it, I’ll get 2 Marshalls for what I’d spend on 1 Mesa”

Sure as shit it can!

TBF, I have the Hot Mod engaged and it's boosted with an SD-1, non-jumped (really, I haven't found a use for jumping the channels yet, there's more than enough low end in the head as-is) but this is pretty much the most amount of dirt I'd want on a rhythm tone.

The more time I spend with a Marshall circuit, the more I believe my ultimate tone is to be found somewhere within them, rather than a Mesa. I do miss the headroom at times, but I think a 100watt Plexi could resolve that.

Love it!

This type of amp tone seems to be the sweet spot for a lot of tiny boutique builders because they can effectively target the "I luv muh modded Marshalls" boomer crowd as well as the "I need something cool-looking that's filthy enough to put a Fortin 33 in front of for my 8-string chugs" youngsters of today.

Hence Hermansson, Monomyth, Headfirst, Gower, Ground Zero Ampworks, etc.

I always chuckle when people beg for these to be added to X modeling platform because they're perpetually sold out. Where is Fractal or Line 6 supposed to get one of these to throw in?

Well, I’m sure Jason from Headfirst would hook Cliff up with an amp as he’s quite fond of Fractal gear. Though I can see why there’s not a ton of modded amps in there; that’s a rabbit hole to open up with so many modders out there and everyone will want their preferred guy to have a Fractal model, meanwhile, modded-Marshall tones in Fractal land plentiful.

That said, in the 90’s, Friedman and Bogner were the Hermansson/Monomyth/Headfirst guys of today, so maybe in another decade or two they’ll be found in Fractals! :ROFLMAO:

(Also, selling my Fortin 33 was what put that SD-1 in my hands!)

"I need this quintessential boutique tone that I've only heard in isolated playthroughs from influencers and not on a single recording ever! I NEED THIS."

SD-1s are savage boys to this day, and can get near as aggressive or clangy as many a "modern" boutique overdrive at a fraction of the price.

Yeah, I think that pedal has been around so long people have just forgotten how great it is. I absolutely hated that Fortin 33, it literally did the opposite of what I love about tones to anything I put it in front of. I may have aged out of modern guitar tones. :rofl

The SD1 just kind of tripped a switch in my mind. I never liked it prior to the Recto really. It does this honky thing on top that really works :satan
