Warming up my amp before checking out the Hendrix FF for the first time-
It's lighter than the EJ FF, like it's made of aluminum and the EJ is steel. The bottom plates even feel/sound different when tapping on them. Obviously not a big deal, just kinda stuck out to me right away, I actually thought the box was going to be empty when I pulled it out of the shipping box.
First impressions- WTF is up with the volume? I need to crank the thing past halfway for it to be unity gain with the amp, on the EJ FF it's at unity where it's at in the picture. VERY different than the EJ FF.....kinda weird, I like it as much as I don't like it. I'm going to have to play with it some more. It's got no mids in comparison to the EJ, the word 'brown' jumped out at me the second I compared them back to back.....that's the first time a color ever popped in my head in relation to a tone before and it's got nothin to do with EVH.
It's much more spitty, almost clangy in the top end, this would be horrible in a really bright amp. This actually reminds me more of what I'd expect a Smashing Pumpkins sig Big Muff would sound like. They both sound infinitely better being run into the NOTADUMBLE with the clean boost on, fills in the mids and removes a lot of the ratty/spitty sound.
When I get back from the dog park I'll toss an A/B clip up. Now I'm off to order the parts to start building my own FF. I'm a bit intrigued right now as these are both silicone fuzzes, I didn't look at the components that close but I'm so fucking curious what's doing all the tone shaping in there. As of now the EJ blows the Hendrix away, even though the Hendrix might get a little closer, tonally, to the actual EJ Fuzz Face sound I'm chasing.
I also predict some Analogman Sun Faces in my future. I'm not all that interested in germanium fuzz, surprisingly, so far my germanium experiences haven't been fruitful outside of the germanium Dover Drive. Though I'm sure at some point I'll get really curious about legit NKT275's or Red Dot's. I almost imupusively bought a "cheap" NKT275 Sun Face last week because it was $700 instead of the usual $950.
