The Fuzz Thread

I had a shootout today. Just got a Behringturd Fuzz Bender. Put it up against a Chicago Stompworks Devi Ever (Hyperion clone?), EHX Lizard Queen, and a Movall (Caline?) Big Fott (definitely the best Big Muff clone I’ve heard, if you’re in need of lovely muffiness, this’ll get ya there).
Will A/B when my Supreme gets here.

For today, the Hyperion and Big Fott were the coolest. Jury is still out on the Bender. Lizard Queen is nice also. Maybe it was the air in the room I dunno. It and the Bender may be exiting…… all in the ear of the beholder I guess….

Glorious NPD!!!!!

This thing absolutely RIPS. Might knock my DeadFX I Can’t Feel My Face Super Fuzz off the board!

Can confirm.

I have a few SF inspired units (Idiotbox, Tru-Fi, for example) and this is by far the best and most versatile of the bunch, while also being the one with the least noise.

On top of that: Flexi switch is awesome!

PS: I like the middle position the best, but all are quite usable and will get RAUNCHY.

What’s the deal with the Lizard Queen? I keep seeing it show up on sale for $39 and keep trying to ignore it. :rofl

I know I almost bought it last time I saw it for 39 bucks, because it’s like Behringturd prices for an ehx fuzz, but then I thought there’s gotta be a reason they are trying to unload these fast, and didn’t pull the trigger.

Valid point. I haven't played one, but it sounds decent in videos, so I'm not sure what could be wrong. Maybe it'll vanish soon?

I planned on buying a Lizard King for our bassist, but got the SA Kingmaker instead. Much better decision, imho.

That’s exactly my takeaway from the pedal. SO many tones in there. The gain knob is really useful as well.

Also agree on the middle position. Op-amp is always the best clipping type in any circuit! Definitely considering kicking off my EQD Tentacles as well.

I have never tried a muff before. I just ordered a ram’s head, I figure it might be a good alternate fuzz option to my 69. If I like it, it might replace my astro tone, which I love but not quite as much as the 69, and they sound somewhat similar, so it seems redundant having both. Maybe I will make room for all three just for fun. Or maybe muffs aren’t for me, we’ll see.

Pretty good fuzz for the coin. Octave is very subtle. Doesn’t clean up Great. Full bore I think it’s nice. $40? Get one!

Alright if any experienced muff divers want to chime in…

I am really digging the sound of the ram’s head, I don’t know why I didn’t try a big muff sooner. But it is really noisy when combined with any other drive pedal I have. Right now I have guitar > fulltone 69 > ram’s head > barber gain changer. When I turn on the muff on its own, it’s relatively quiet, but as soon as I add the gain changer it has a loud idle buzz. And it sounds so much better into the gain changer. Same deal if I click on the 69 with the muff. 69 and GC without the muff is very quiet. Also 69 + astrotone + GC is very quiet. Is this just something I have to deal with with a big muff? I will try moving it farther down in the chain away from the other drive pedals to see if it helps. But I really like the sound of it going into the GC.

Barber stuff is so good. If I could only keep one drive pedal it would be my Burn Unit. Amazing pedal.

I bought one of these a while back. It’s supposedly a combination of 2 DIY circuits: the Bazz Fuss and a Push Me Pull You octave.

The controls are a bit unintuitive. There’s basically 1 level of fuzz. With the Octave off, the Balance knob makes modest EQ changes. With the Octave cranked, the Balance knob makes more sense. The octave sound vaguely reminds me of that brassy sound a Green Ringer can get. The effect of the Octave knob is pretty much in the last 10% of the pot’s sweep.

It was a good pickup at $40.

Alright, I returned the ram’s head nano and ordered a barber exacta ram’s head AND a burn unit :columbo

Both on sale right now, couldn’t pass them up. Probably should have just picked one but I couldn’t decide which. Looks like I am going to be set for dirt pedals for a while.

I actually didn’t realize Barber had made a compact version. Mine is this old beast:

I’m pleased to see the compact burn unit has the dynamics switch, which replicates my version’s dynamics knob…that’s really the star of the show as it lets you control how much unaffected signal makes it to the output. This allows the circuit to work into a totally clean amp as a MIAB pedal would with the direct signal dialed out, as well as work with overdriven amps where you usually want some dry signal in there to keep things from getting too compressed.

It’s seriously a brilliant design and Barber was smart enough to recognize it and carry it over to the compact. The Burn Unit is possibly my only drive pedal that can be set to work with any guitar, any amp, and somehow also be either transparent or colorful.

Have fun man. It’s a hell of a pedal. I hope it works out for you.

Got the compact burn unit today, played for over an hour and I love it, I’m not sure how the 3 way switch compares to the dynamics knob on yours, but the feel is awesome, I settled on the in between setting for now. It also sounds great going into the gain changer with both set to lower gain. And it looks so cool with the black sparkle and red orange yellow gradient, he really nailed the look on this one, I love it.

Exacta sounds great, way better than the nano rams head and way more versatile with the switches and ability to add mids and cut bass.

I’ll be keeping both. 2 fuzzes and 2 overdrives might be a little overkill but it’s fun having options.

That’s a killer board!

Re: the dynamics switch vs knob - I’m pretty sure the compact versions 3 way switch just maps to the left/center/right positions on the pot used on the older big box versions, which is honestly enough. I pretty much only use those three positions on the knob because everything in between those positions is subtle. In other words, I don’t think you’re losing anything useful having the switch vs the pot.

You’ll find the dynamics really useful as you move between amps and other types of sounds. Sometimes you want the clean guitar poking through the drive, sometimes you don’t. The burn unit can do both.
