The Fuzz Thread

Are you running any weird neon lights or dimmer switches? That can be a culprit sometimes.

Yes! I have some LED floods on dimmers that cause all sorts of noise, where other bulbs on the same brand/model dimmers in other rooms are fine. You don’t have to be in the same room as the noisy lights either. If they are on, humbuckers into otherwise quiet amps are noisy.

I can turn those lights off whenever I want to play, but in an apartment building, that could be a problem.

LED lights can cause problems to audio gear.
I’ve a friend that was pulling his hair out years ago because his audio system wasn’t sounding right.
It turned out it was his new rechargeable toothbrush in his bathroom .🤣

Yesterday and today I’ve been playing around with my newly arrived DOD Carcosa Fuzz pedal.
Today using my Gibson SG through my VOX AC15 head and Orange 4 X 12’ Celestion Vintage 30 cab.
Have to say I’m suitably impressed 👍and wonder why this pedal wasn’t on my radar until some of you on here started posting about it last year.

It (the Fuzz Faces) works great in my living room!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I start with the Hendrix Fuzz Face here- (@SillyOctpuss, good time to hear a comparison, they're set the same)

Ohhhhhh I really love them both and I can tell mic placement on the amp can have a profound effect on the outcome just by moving my head around the cab. There's a ton of mids in the EJ FF hearing it almost dead on, but if you stand off to the side of the cab where he always does (even in his studio), it thins out and sounds much closer to the Hendrix FF. I really wonder how much that plays a role with EJ dialing in his rig and how much he's listening to it mic'd or dead on.

Anyway, these are a fucking treat and I want all the Fuzz Faces now. All of them.

Have you tried them with your other strat without active pickups? In that video the EJ definitely sounds better to my ears, I wonder if the low bias really helps it with the active pickups in front whereas the higher bias of the Hendrix Fuzz might be making it sound thinner with your EMGs.

If you want to try out other FFs, try and get your hands on a Thorpy Tacit Blue. It's really spectacular, just so versatile.

We've got my wife's parents staying with us and they're in the room I keep my gear in. I'll do a video with the Thorpy vs the Hendrix Fuzz after they've gone.

It says they have 10 left .
This is a bargain now at £119 in the sale👍
I’ve had one for ages and it’s a excellent pedal 👍

Only 499 built limited edition and its on sale for that much off? Guess it wasn't a popular limited edition!

Sounds fucking great man. Looking forward to hearing the difference with the other non active pickups as SillyOctpuss mentioned with the Hendrix silicon FF.

Oh I’ve played my other Strat a bunch into it, I think you might be right on that assessment, too. I know I’ve read a ton of “actives and fuzzes are a no-no!” but I’ve got no complaints in general, though it does make them harder to clean up. I gotta pretty much crank the fuzz all the way up to get a comparable sound with the other Strat. Those Pribora’s are vintage-voiced and definitely have a 50’s single coil output level, just a really warm bridge pickup.

I’ll pull it out in a few, doesn’t look like my neighbor is going to be home again tonight. :headbang

It’s got the same circuit as the blue Hendrix FF I just got, but if it had a different circuit I’d definitely want it, despite it being ugly as hell…..I’m actually glad it’s the same circuit. :ROFLMAO:

Yeah I run the Fuzz all the way up then just backed off till the frying bacon sound goes away on the Hendrix Fuzz with passive pickups. The clean up with the Hendrix is as good as any of my germanium FFs. The Thorpy Tacit Blue though works from the fuzz up full to backed right off for lower gain OD stuff.

Alright, got some more Fuzz Face vids, I break down the signal path/amp settings in the video. The passive pickups have so much less output than the EMG’s that I either have to dime the amp or use the Fuzz Faces with another dirt pedal to get the same kind of sustain out of them.

My bad, I should have backed away from the camera when I was playing so the string noise wouldn’t be as loud.

I also plugged in the Fulltone ‘70 but didn’t turn it on in either vid, I actually like the sound of that pedal more than both but only because the mid knob, when the mid knob is turned all the way down and the fuzz is cranked it’s virtually indistinguishable from the Hendrix, which would make sense as they’re both BC108C’s. But man, I love what that mid knob does because it increases gain without things getting too fuzzed out. So far I prefer stacking them more than I do relying on amp dirt to get them really singing.
