I need to get one as well, my iMac is a 2TB fusion drive but I have so many damn libraries stored on it I've only got 680G left of room. I'd love to load all my SD3/EastWest libraries on an external drive, as well as having a place to dump my Logic sessions.

That's what I am planning to do. Sample library, and storage for music.

Most USB 3 SSDs are pretty fast for backup IMO. Unless you are doing large video files.

i don't do any super heavy tracking (usually just one track overdubbing at a time), so i just use a regular external SSD as my read/write drives for files when i am doing the session. i don't actually do it natively on the mac mini drive.

I use 2x Samsung 860 QVO SSD (4TB) in a Blackmagicdesign MultiDock 10G—one for songs and the other for sounds. My guy at Vintage King swears they're pretty much a standard now.
