Should I flog....?

Should I flog my Axe FX III? I've got a Helix Stadium on pre-order, and I'm pretty sure it is going to be sick. I've still got a Helix kicking around, and I still really dig it, apart from just being a bit bored by some of the effects. I have the VP4, and I love it too.

Generally speaking, I just use my amps. They sound the best, whether through a cab or a loadbox.

Axe III .... I love it in theory, but in practice, I am not capitalizing on it at all.

If I were you and I was happy with the amp tones I was getting outside of the Axe FX III, and was happy with the effect limitations of the VP-4 (+ the other FX you have), keeping in mind that the Stadium won't have new FX at launch, then I wouldn't really see the point of having multiple modelers unless I wanted to compare them over time (like with new updates and stuff) or something, and I'd get rid of the Axe.

For myself, I've been anti-gear-hoarding for a while, and almost never buy new gear without at least planning to sell something else, and I end up having a lot more fun with my gear because of it... but it's such a personal thing and depends a lot on your workflow and goals, I think (not to mention space and budget lol)

That said, if I didn't need the funds from selling the Axe to fund the Stadium, I'd probably keep it until getting the Stadium just in case. I feel like I'd be kicking myself if I didn't get to directly compare them, especially stuff like feel.

Either way, I'd def sell the Helix I still had since the Stadium will contain all of that stuff anyway.

If it isn't being used and you have other stuff you use as indicated, then move it.
You can always get another one later if you want. No use having something like that sitting there not being used.

I sold mine because I moved back to a tube preamp with built in IRs and an amp load box as well.

I kinda vote “sell the helix and keep the Axe” - the Stadium will be everything the Helix is and more, and your VP4 has Fractal effects, but you may find yourself wanting to compare Augora amps with Fractal’s and you won’t be able to.

You know the axe units inside out... if its not gonna get some love for 6-12+ months due to a massive arsenal of everything else + shiny new stadium, just move it on. I wish I took my own advice but #effort. You can always rebuy these units anyway.

If there is any chance you will rebuy the III, don't.

If you believe that will be it for this current gen of fractal, especially the III then I say go ahead.

Speaking from experience on someone who would have saved a ton of money if they would have just kept the OG III they bought in 2019 😂

I can't remember if he's on his 6th III or he tried a Kemper 6x, but he knows how this is gonna go. :rofl

I’m probably the wrong person to ask - I’ve got quite a lot of things hanging around unused which I should have moved on but in my opinion….. I think the sensible thing would be to sell the helix as the stadium will do all those bits and more. Once you’ve had the stadium for a while you’ll then know if there’s anything the Axe does better than the stadium to a significant enough level that you’d miss it. Better to wait until that point otherwise your memory will nag at you, telling you that a particular amp was much better than the stadium version and you can’t live without it.

I flogged mine. No biggie. I'm mostly using the 1987X now and realized that I wasn't using the AF3, so why bother keeping it around? Also had an FC-12 which was just taking up space.

But of course it's a great piece of gear. AF3 was a fantastic tool for slowly working through all the amp models and effects as my taste involved, until what I wanted in an amp started to coalesce around '59 Bassman / JTM45 / Plexi sounds. But now I know that's what I like.

I'm a also delay freak and it turns out I prefer the Valhalla stuff more, as well as some specific pedals.

Concerning the AF3, ultimately I preferred the FM9 form factor; that's closer to my sweat spot. Also interested in the smaller Stadium - which looks to be my _exact_ sweet spot for dedicated hardware; so maybe I'll pick one of those up some day.

I daresay I'll also pick up whatever the next gen FAS device is too! Great company and solid hardware.

If it's not a problem for you financially to be churning gear, then I say sell it now while the market is still good for it.

My reasoning - even though I really missed the timeline - was that I expected Fractal might release something new in 2025, but also because I was using only a fraction of its capabilities. The FM3 was honestly a more apt product for what I want out of a modeler.

I love a lot of the Fractal delay/reverb/modulation/pitch effects, but since you have the VP4 it's not like you need to give that up.

I've been playing my amps almost exclusively for the past years, and all of them are very versatile so it's not like I need a ton of options modelers offer.

I'm on the fence about whether I even need the HX Stadium. I feel like every year my fx rigs get simpler and simpler, with delay and reverb being the only real staples.

I'd sell the Helix at least, but sounds to me the Axe-Fx 3 is on the way out.

I agree with these guys; In your situation I’d sell the Helix before the Axe-FX III.

I think it's kinda too much for me, that's really what it boils down to. It can do soooooo much, but it is complicated and takes time and energy to do things. Really I just want to throw a few pedals in front of an amp and call it a day. That's where I'm at 99% of the time.

I really don't enjoy how computer centric the eco-system is. Yeah the editor is really capable. Best editor around. All the rest of it.

I don't want to use it.

But seriously, I understand where you’re coming from.

Considering this…

Really I just want to throw a few pedals in front of an amp and call it a day.

…and that you have the Stadium incoming, that you have a VP4 and nice pedals, and with what I know about your amps, I’d say: sell both the Helix and the Axe-FX III.

Is flog British slang for sell? Or does it mean move or get rid of?

Edit: looked it up and yes it is.
