I really want a company to make a modern 1U rackmount effects processor

Can't provide actual numbers but Helix Rack sales are much lower than Helix Floor or Helix LT's. I have it on good authority that at least one multieffects manufacturer developed a rack version of their floor unit but the dealers didn't want to stock it so they scrapped the whole thing.

Same reason there isn't a Catalyst CX head. Heads don't sell nearly as well as combos.

Oh for sure, those of us that love rack systems are a tiny minority.

It really depends on the company and the marketing though as well. Fractal started out as a rack gear company, and still when people think Fractal, it's not the FM3, it's the Axe FX. TC Electronic and Eventide both successfully made the transition from rack gear to pedals. When I think of Line 6, I don't think of rack gear, and I don't think I've ever seen a Helix rack used by a band live or seen one even in person. When I think of Line 6, it's the HD500, bean, and the Helix floor / HX Stomp that come to mind first.

Every band I see coming through town right now is playing an Axe FX, Kemper rack, or a Quad Cortex. Local bands and some touring acts have heads and pedals but they're nowhere near as prevalent. I did see one band with a Dual Rectifier, no cab, and a Captor X recently as well. There's a big difference though between bigger touring acts and just the majority of us players for sure though.

I'd even like to see a move away from the rack form, maybe a box similar to that of the Orange Pedal Baby. I could see stacking something like that on top of a head or power amp.

That is a terrible idea. The dumbest box available is the SD power stage 700 . Inputs and outputs in stupid places and no integration. Rack is a very convenient format that is widely used.

Humble opinion and questionable tact noted.

Rack format was widely used. We just read that rack sales don't compare to floor unit sales from a company representative.

I'd buy it.

Is widely used, in other industries and all live performances and TV broadcasting and studios.
Rack is expensive because it requires separate foot controls for guitar and this impacts sales. Anyone touring on a large scale is surrounded by rack equipment even if they don’t personally use it.

In professional circles it's a lot of racks.
It's nice to have your instrument wireless receivers and processing and oftentimes mixing and wireless monitoring in one neat package in a convenient shock mounted package.
I know a bunch of bands that have keys and electric drums connected with pre-configured snakes and just go to FOH with two line level XLR outs.
If there's a fixed setlist and clicks, there's oftentimes even automated patch changes for guitars.

There is a reason some things come back into fashion. There is also a reason the horse and buggy will never come back into mainstream production. Sure there is that one guy in every town that would sell his rusted out ‘72 El Dorado convertible to fund a horse and buggy so he could make a statement ‘driving’ to CVS to get his meds and diapers but big auto is not worried with losing that demographic.

Modern multi effects can be put in a single rack drawer or at least a similar sized space. I’d look to create a ‘rack drawer’ that facilitates best use of a couple pieces like VP4 and boldly embrace the new century.

seems like the touring acts with quad cortex’s have done exactly that and just got on with it. I’m sure they’d prefer a rackmount format but it ultimately makes little difference (unless they were to improve the PSU or noise which may be possible with a bigger form factor that doesn’t need to be stuck on the floor).

Yep but a rack drawer is going to take up minimum of 2 rack spaces with the height of the pedals in them, and doesn't have a nifty front-facing display.

And requires more depth, my G system is less than 6 inches deep - so I can get away with a shallower rack unit. It's also more weight etc.

a ‘drawer’ designed to pull out and tip down at about 45degrees with a pair of vp4’s would give pretty quick access and deliver more than any 1”or 2” rack piece ever did…and infinitely more than the one that will never be built ;)
