Probably because you're dialing in the effect the same way as when you'd have it after the amp. Spatial effects before distortion need to be dialed in a bit differently. Lower mix values generally, shorter decay or feedback times depending on taste.Can’t argue with genius, but I still think it sounds like ass, when pretty much everyone else does it.
If I were to put the Cosmos Echo before an amp, I'd probably only have the mix around 15% but the distortion of the amp will bring out the character of the effect, and I like it because it adds glue and bounce to the performance, as the effect and the dry signal fight to maintain dominance when hitting the front.
Whenever I add effects in the loop, I always feel like I can't get it to be mushy enough.
