It finally happened.

That's defenitely not a great idea. I even notice my guitar to somehow get lost already when just running some keys through my wedge, which is why I always try to have my personal guitar monitoring separated from anything else (just that sometimes it's not possible).
But seriously, we're not comparing apples and apples here anymore. I mean, that guitar combo (or whatever you plan to buy) certainly won't be used for any bass, so the comparison is somewhat flawed.
The initial post was looking for cheap combos for both to separate them.

I wouldn't put an FR in a loud metal band show really at all. Loud enough when pushed for a cover band but someone ripping out your lower intestinal tract in drop E; not so much. They'd probably blow the speaker with as much bass running :sofa :rofl
When you put it that way... well yeah, obviously. I guess the OP sent me off in the wrong direction with its initial mention of 2x EV ZLX12P. That's so clearly not going to work, I'd wager 2x FR12's would be an enormous improvement.

Re: bass, I did a set of Sabbath through an FR10 yesterday, and it sounded awesome. It took a bit of tweaking, of course, but this mostly involved cutting a lot of bass (in addition to rounding off some of the very high end.)

I'm surprised FR10/ FR12 haven't "entered the chat" yet. Are we assuming these simply aren't loud enough? They seem like the intended answer for the exact question in the OP. Good controls to tailor output for any given room, easy to use at various angles for sidewashing, XLR output to the board, etc.
If what I’m using now isn’t working the same thing in a different box isn’t going to either. Plus those things are not fun to look at at all. Fender aesthetic … no thanks.

For me; the subject is real. Especially when I am gigging the all modeling rigs. I don't have these issues when I just bring an amp because they cut through. The room in question sounds like a nightmare and the style of music is definitely not something that can be "controllable" so much. In fact; that would be one of it's charms I think. Sometimes grimy ugly LOUD guitars are a good thing! \m/

Won't argue on aesthetics; FR's aren't very metal. Then again... is an EV ZLX12P?

As for sound and functionality, having used both, I wouldn't be inclined to call them the same thing at all. But I'm not trying to push an agenda here. It sounds to me like you need a good 2x12 cab and power amp.

Once you are 10 feet away, anything the 2x12 can do fits inside a Venn Diagram circle of a powerful "FRFR" of any sort. Not sure if the EV ZLX12P fits in that but there are many who would

“If you have 10 minutes to tweak the sound of the "FRFR" in the room on top of your standard line/“sound” check, when there are six bands on the bill you should be able to get to to do what you are hoping one of these combo amps might do on its own without any adjustments. I just can’t see why you might be interested in using a combo in this scenario” :wat

Don't want tube amp. Ok so either solid state or "FRFR" that's not a Fender FR. In that case you're probably looking at:

Boss Katana 100
(Roland JC?)
ToneX Cab
Laney FR (1x12 or 2x12)

But you wanna keep it under $1k for both guitar and bass...so...

Katana 100 I guess?

Seems like the options to hit all your targets are pretty damned limited?
