IK Multimedia TONEX

New FX and more slots coming to the software and the pedals SOON (TM)

Obviously IK has earned some well deserved heat for their history of abandonware and a pretty lackluster UX on Tonex. As someone who grabbed the Tonex at launch as a way to experiment with newer capture technology, this update feels like a very encouraging sign that there might actually be a long term roadmap for Tonex.

I’m not expecting the most amazing FX in the world, but this is still a huge addition. Now I wish they’d find a way to split outputs so we can send one side without a cab.

Yea, remembering the IK software hell made me realize the only good thing about this coming release is maybe if I wait and time it right I can sell my TONEX 1 for a few bucks more during the height of the buzz in November than I would get right now.

Anniversary Edition just ordered ! Next months upgrade should be icing on the cake...we'll see.

Anniversary Edition canceled ! I just ordered the original model for $299.99 NEW ($100 off) through SW. (same unit, just Black edition)
This offer is good through today 10/9/2024.

I’ve been using Helix lately as it’s giving me FX and all, but finally took a couple hours last night to load in and preview all the amalgam captures I picked up a couple weeks ago. I hadn’t plugged into my Tonex pedal in months.

I have to admit I’m fairly underwhelmed. Lots of great EOB and mig gain stuff, did not really get on with their Mesa IIC, V, or really any of the higher gain stuff. The 800 and SL100 both feel dead under the fingers, I suspect neither amp has a bright cap on the bright channel.

I’m coming around to prefer white glove modeling over the black box stuff. Will try it again soon, maybe it was just a weird ear night.

I’d really like to find some solid Mesa Mark II/III/IV captures.

When I need to travel as light as possible and can’t pack my FAS gear, I bring a Tonex One. Can’t beat the size.

Sounds are fine. I just use the included JCM 800 and Deluxe Reverb captures. Plus Studio Rats’ free Vox from Tonex. That’s all, I dislike auditing many hundreds of individual captures.

I can see where the complaints about the software come from. Tonex SE isn’t buggy, the interface just is immensely confusing.

Direct communications with the pedal and access to its settings are available in the “Librarian” section. Weird name.

Take care when exiting the software because it determines the mode / state of the pedal.

Nowhere in the interface is explained how to prevent double processing (software AND pedal) or how to disable the DI sound. Even the documentation fails at that. It’s covered (incompletely) in the online FAQ only, while it’s the most important thing to do when using the pedal for the first time with the software. And so on.

IK’s product catalog is as confusing. Is SE newer or more complete than CS, I have no clue. Why can’t I launch SE from the Product Manager.

But the pedal by itself is okay, once you understand the important difference between Stomp mode and A/B mode. For practical purposes you probably need to use both. Especially with the iOS software, because bypassing the pedal in Stomp mode is the only way to prevent double processing.

I still don’t get the Preset Browsing mode.

I’m tempted to get a tonex one for rehearsals and fm3 backup.

But why no midi?

I would love to capture my fm3 live tones and put them in this pedal.

If something goes wrong I just have to replace the fm3 in the signal chain and voila.

There is only so much you physically can put in a mini pedal. And they want keep selling the larger brother too, which has MIDI.

The full ToneX has more I/O, more switches, a screen, more memory slots and comes bundled with the more complete versions of the desktop software. That should be enough of a reason for the price difference. There's no reason to gimp functionality that already exists. MIDI over USB has been around forever. Even if they sold a dongle like Source Audio does, people would buy it for the added functionality.

Im a noob, could the Tonex ONE support a USB-C to MIDI converter and we control the effects in the ONE with a MIDI switcher pedal?

You can put 1/8" MIDI on something that size (TC Sentry has an 1/8" for the loop and Tonex One already has a USB port, and there is a sort of workaround to get midi

When I read the instructions for it I gave up.
I figured A) it won’t work the way they say it will…because that’s a safe bet with IK Tonex over 60% of the time…
Or B) without knowing which capture it is loading why bother?!? I’m sure as hell not going to remember the order they all are in nor can I tell where the scrolling starts in the order and the tiny knobs are going to have me skipping captures even if I did somehow know where I was in the 50 unnamed possible slots when I start turning.

I’m pretty sure the software designer is a disgruntled employee who is punking the company and the company is clueless… or the software designer is the owners son so they can’t fire him.

Just adding some Mesa captures I took over the weekend. It’s a mixture of Studio Preamp and Mark III, all direct.

Here's my first recording with firmware 1.8, released today, using the new delay block :

The effects are basic but useful ! Can't wait to receive my Fractal Audio VP4 to pair it with my Tonex Pedal
