Helix Talk

Yeah the legacy effects are quite often really cool!

For the legacy delays, I kinda wish they had an extra parameter which was something like "emulate DL-4 DAC" which would cruft up the delays even more. I think @Digital Igloo might've mentioned this before as an idea they had and then figured it would be a bit to OTT, but I love stuff like that!
IIRC, no one in the room felt the OG converter modeling sounded subjectively better or cooler or more mojo-y, even in a vintage digital sort of way. Believe me, we hoped it might be cool, plus the marketing story might've been interesting.

But without it, we had enough DSP to include reverbs, so we went with that instead.

I was more thinking Helix Floor, but yeah even for DL-4 MKII.... nice bullet point.. but if it doesn't actually make that much difference, then yahhhh sack it off.

If they named that category "vintage" instead of "legacy",
I have to admit, I do automatically jump to "not that modern and not that usable anymore" when I think legacy. That'll be my software background though, where legacy basically means "fuck you, install it at your own risk, and don't come knockin' if it doesn't work anymore"

Anyone still having issues with digital clipping with the Dynamic Reverbs, specifically when running a stereo delay on a separate path?

The issue goes away when running everything on the same path.

Right, so basically when it is in a parallel path like that... you're effectively dealing with double the dry signal when your mix is that low. You want to set it to 100% when in a parallel path. Nearly always, unless you're after some weird volume boost.

This is probably what is causing your digital clipping.

Try 100% mix, and then the volume of the delay block you can set to -8dB or something... so that it isn't overpowering your main dry signal coming across from the other path.

Ahh. I should have remembered this, as it’s best practice and I do this all the time on my FAS devices. I picked the wrong week to take a t-break. Thanks dude!

Hello good! A few months ago I was making Real cab IRs for Helix, in this case I made one specially designed for the Placater Dirty. The audio is the HX stomp direct via USB to PC. My idea is that by simply selecting the amp, with the preset settings it will already sound good, quite real. Do you like the result? Hug!

@Digital Igloo , is it even remotely possible to incorporate some kind of IR Capture in the Helix hardware? It may not be on your roadmap, I'm just wondering if the ability is even there.

If it is, that would be a cool feature. Especially if it could export WAV files ;)

My understanding is that yes, it's possible, but:
  • Only Helix Floor and Helix Rack have an XLR mic pre; external mic pres could certainly work with the others but they may have to be compensated for
  • Given the 80/20 rule, the effort required to add IR capture to Helix/HX likely wouldn't warrant the number of users who'd take advantage of it

Normally the big Helix is in the roadcase in the basement when I am not practicing with the band or gigging. All the tones at home are courtesy of Cantabile and Helix Native/Metallurgy.

Today I unplugged the Helix from the roadcase and brought it to my "office" (or the space where the computer is).

I cannot believe how much better the Helix sounds in comparison to a 3rd gen Scarlett 2i2 and Native. Same presets (Just export and import) and it sounds way better to my ears. Is this the impedance thing/AD/headphone amp thing in the Helix vs. the Scarlett? Or is it just psychology fucking with my mind bc I have something "new" (that is still kinda old). Anyway, it motivates me to play again and I guess that's what counts.

If I had to play another month with the Scarlett and Native I guess I would have ditched that whole shit and bought an amp again. So... lackluster, even though the sounds are great on a technical/sonical level.

Could be a lot of things: A/D/A conversion, impedance circuit, dynamic range, etc. But it's most likely a combination of your DAW's full-throughput latency and lack of optimized gain staging. Might be worth investigating using your Helix as an interface, just to eliminate possibilities.
