Helix Talk

I'm experimenting with this layout.

Helix is hooked to a mini jubilee in 4cm.
The goal is to use ch1 for cleanish and crunch sounds using the jubilee rythm clip option; ch2 for leads.

Yellow Circled FS activate a compressor and an eq in front of the amp reducing the overall level in order to get a cleanish sound. Activates also a gain block after the loop to compensate for volume loss. These block are in path B because I need them to be out of the way when I use amp ch1

Red circled FS switch to ch2 and A path in the helix

I'd love to have the Yellow Circled FS led off for cleans and on for cruch. It's a minor thing but my brain prefer to see it that way.

For the curious ones:

Purple circled FSs are snapshots that activate single modulations (as per their names) or deactivate them (FX OFF). I've set it up this way because I can toggle between effects with one push.
I'd love the see on the helix the implementation of Toggle groups: meaning a way to link footswitches with an X-OR logic.

Minotaur and the two delays are direct and independent (snapshot bypass set to off) FS assignments.

I feel like the signal chain doesn't need to be this complicated...? Why do you need to use B paths, why not just put things in series and bypass them as needed?

I'd imagine it's so that when Lead! is activated the footswitch is on, and having less assignments to a footswitch makes snapshot states a little easier. But it's just a guess.

Interesting, presumably Lead! switches both split blocks from B 100% to A 100%?
Yes!

What does Clean/Crunch toggle on and off?
Jubilee ch1 is set to crunch therefore to get a clean sound I reduce the volume hitting the amp input and recover some volume loss after the send/return block.

Clean turn on a compressor, an eq (this one lower the volume) and a gain block after the s/r.

What distinguished Clean from Crunch?

Volume hitting the input and a bit of eqing

Edit: I also have The Elephant Man and Transistor Tape is series, they're a great combination!

I rarely use them together but I love them both.

Because clean is obtained by lowering the volume hitting the amp input when ch1 is engaged on the amp. See above post for a deeper explanation.

You can't assign the same blocks to two different foot switches and when I switch to lead (ch2) I need the blocks assigned to the clean/crunch FS to be all bypassed.

This an elegant and effective way to reach the goal.

@Digital Igloo

In a recent fw update you made snapshots ignore the on/off state of helix foot switches and that's awesome. A big improvement, one of my favourite features ever, along with the snapshot bypass option.

But I've discovered that it doesn't always work. (Or I'm doing something wrong)

If you assign a FS to change the amp channel (via ext amp out) in command center, recalling a different snapshot reverse the FS state.

Or at least that's what happens to me.

I have a FS that is assigned to ext amp and to 2 A/B split paths (going from 100B to 100A). Split path assignment are set to snapshot bypass off.

Thanks for you patient ;)

Edit: from 3.5 release notes

Prior to 3.50, when assigning a parameter to a physical control (EXP 1, footswitch, etc.) or MIDI, Snapshots are also always assigned. In 3.50, they still are, but there's an additional "Snapshot Control" parameter on the Controller Assign page that lets you bypass this default.

  1. From the Controller Assign menu, select the desired parameter and turn Knob 2 (Controller) to select any value other than "None" or "Snapshots." A second page appears.
  2. Press PAGE > and turn Knob 1 (Snapshot Control) to "Off." It's set to "On" by default for all parameters.

I don't see a second page when assigning a parameter to an expression pedal ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The second page only appears for footswitch, variax and midi CC assignments.

Good luck!

Yeah, I've seen that. It's disappointing 😞

The ext amp out thing is much more disappointing.

Basically you can't assign the ext amp out command to a footswitch and also use snapshots for other things because every time you change snapshot it will trigger the amp out relay changing your amp channel.

You have to decide whether use only snapshots (with instant commands for channel switching) or no snapshots at all.

I wish this will be fixed.

Can we please bring back the metal bar?

Please vote this up if intrested

The 3.5 feature Disable Snapshot Control over Parameter Assignments doesn't work when the parameter assigned to a foot swtich is an ext amp command.

At the moment is not possibile to use a foot switch for amp channel control and snapshots because when you change snapshot the helix will trigger the ext amp relay inverting the footswitch state (and any other assignment eventually made to that switch).

I suggest adding a Snapshot Control on/off option like it happens for any block parameter.

favorites don’t seem to save all the controllers you assign to them
According to the manual, they aren't supposed to:

Once you’ve dialed in an amp or effects block exactly the way you like it,you can save its settings as a “Favorite” so the block can be added very quickly to other tones, complete with your stored parameter settings, bypass state, and existing bypass assignment (excluding any existing controller or snapshot assignments)*.

You know what's nice? I was just visiting my common German forum since... forever... and all they talk is how the FMxxx and the QC and the whateverthefuckthereis sounds so much better out of the box than the Helix. Feels like I'm stuck in 2020. It's nice to come back here and see some actual common sense 'n' stuff.

Edit: And the shits n giggles here are better, too. Germans just can't have humor in forums.

I guess we're all better off here than in Shillville. 😁

PS: Musikerboard? Ich verlauf mich manchmal dorthin und bin jedes Mal schockiert, wie schlecht viele der dort Postenden informiert sind. ;)
