Deftones is what got me into metal. Couldn't be bothered with it for the longest time (hardest I got was probably Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, or The Cult) but saw the "My Own Summer (Shove It)" video on 120 Minutes one Sunday night and thought "Wait, it's clearly metal but I LOVE this. What's going on?" Watched an interview and they mentioned being inspired by The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, etc. so it all made sense.
A couple of years later, "Change (In the House of Flies)" debuted on the radio and I literally pulled the car over. It positively
floored me.
Decades later, I still couldn't get into any metal with screaming in it... until Deafheaven's
Sunbather came out, which is also now in my top 5.
Coincidentally, both Deftones and Deafheaven use Helix.
