Helix Talk

Oh man, Chino's dissonant melodies on the records slay me—nobody sounds like him unless they're emulating him. But yeah, he can be pitchy live.

Yep, probably in my top 5.

Deftones is what got me into metal. Couldn't be bothered with it for the longest time (hardest I got was probably Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, or The Cult) but saw the "My Own Summer (Shove It)" video on 120 Minutes one Sunday night and thought "Wait, it's clearly metal but I LOVE this. What's going on?" Watched an interview and they mentioned being inspired by The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, etc. so it all made sense.

A couple of years later, "Change (In the House of Flies)" debuted on the radio and I literally pulled the car over. It positively floored me.

Decades later, I still couldn't get into any metal with screaming in it... until Deafheaven's Sunbather came out, which is also now in my top 5.

Coincidentally, both Deftones and Deafheaven use Helix.
That Sunbather album is AMAZE!

I’ve listened to Deafheaven this week, all albums from latest to oldest so ending with Sunbather. Cool to know they use Helix!
Keep going! Demo is from 2013 and their first album Roads to Judah is from 2011. Both are excellent.

New album this month; already have my tickets for their show with Trauma Ray. First single "Magnolia" here:

Deftones was an acquired taste for me. I've had two different friend groups attempt to get me into them but Chino has always made me take a hard left. I got hooked with Diamond Eyes and really got into a Deftones phase for a while.
