Helix 3.7: The Freeman Update

NiN was GREAT for a long period when they first came out. 100%. One of my biggest concert disappointments was when the Downward Spiral show I had tickets to was cancelled :cry:

One of the first shows I caught upon moving to Atlanta was NIN touring this album opening for David Bowie touring on the Outside record with Reeves Gabrels. Top 3 live experience for me still!

Oh I bet it was! The cancellation at the time was terrible weather conditions. I was ready to make the journey in the visibility crippling blizzard but apparently; the band was not :hmm

Especially early NIN is dark, melodious and awesome. Good stuff!!! Bonus points for 90's high school nostalgia 🙂

Later material doesn't phase me much... Most of it sounds like random tracks fed through a Sherman Filter Bank, with digital piano and sad/cold ambience in the background. *yawns*

EDIT: Sometimes I cringe at Sober/Buff Trent Reznor.

The good news is there were a lot of bootlegging and board recordings of those shows as people kind of understood how momentous that pairing was, especially as they transitioned between the two bands with a three-song set they did together.

I remember driving to Portland ME in freezing rain at 20 mph the whole way to see Megadeth and Judas Priest. Was completely brutal. At points the rain would freeze on the windshield in between wiper cycles.

On the flip side I once spent over 2k to put on a fan appreciation party/show once on Halloween night and 2 people came because there was really bad freezing rain.

Was this on that Operation Rock and Roll tour? I saw that same tour but trying to remember.

Question to folks who have been playing with the updates, do you think the JCM800 (Brit 2203) PREAMP block can be used to emulate a Blues Driver? I
Have you ever used with success the preamp blocks of Helix as OD effects?
I have always been very curious to try the preamps to get more types of color and gain, but the results I got were between bad and... worse: hence I gave up.
The Blues Driver (stock version) is a slightly dirty boost, with a flat response, so there are many potential alternatives. At higher OD settings it has too much bass, shrill highs and buzzy sounds, nothing very nice imho or nice if you're looking for the opposite of nuanced and smooth tones.
I don't think that it behaves (well) like a real tube amp, therefore I would reply "No, I don't" to your question anyway.

I LOVE early (but not TOO early) Ministry :satan I feel you 1000% on the monotonous thing

Ministry back in around 1990 was the craziest show I ever went to. There was a 20' chainlink fence in front of the band and people were throwing shit against it and others were climbing it to dive into the crowd all night long - So What was one of my favorites and so was the CD Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste.

Oh yes! I saw them on Lollapalooza :satan That CD and Land of... were KILLER \M/ \M/

Now y'all are speaking my language. First saw NIN at one of their secret shows a week after The Downward Spiral came out—tiny venue in Tucson. Met Trent after the show and he gave me a signed key from one of the Yamaha DX7's they smashed on stage. (Was stolen at a house party years later.)

Saw so many great industrial bands in Phoenix in the 90s: Ministry, KMFDM, Pigface, Front 242, Revolting Cocks, The Young Gods, Front Line Assembly, Lords of Acid, Nitzer Ebb, Thrill Kill Kult, Sheep on Drugs... Never got to see Skinny Puppy and I'll be out of town when they're in LA next month. <sobs>

Yes, I wore Doc Martins.

Shameless name dropping: Decades ago I was working on Machines of Loving Grace's last album (were my favorite band at one time), but they broke up before it was finished. Oh, and Bruce from Kidneythieves is my neighbor.

Yes, I've been able to use some of the fender model preamps, the trainwreck preamp as "pure drive pedals" in front of a Supro tube combo and solid state combos alike and have gotten wonderful results. Some of the preamps are much better sounding than others IMO.
