Helix 3.7: The Freeman Update

2203 does feel right. Congrats L6, I think this is a clear step up as far as the amp modeling goes in the Helix family. I never thought the JCM800 problem was about modeling a modded one. The Bassman model, which I don't think has gotten the praise I think it deserves, made me even more sure about this. Something was done with those models and IMO they are a significant improvement.

When it comes to inspiration, yes, you absolutely could sell everything and create beautiful music on a Walmart bundle.
You think a writer will write a better book on a RGB backlit keyboard than on a typewriter? No, he will not. Likewise musician will not create better music with a different distortion pedal. You think Mozart searched for that one special piano?
Inspirational distortion pedal doesn't exist. The best it can do is to make you play more, i.e. spend more time playing and the more you play, the more time you create music, better chance of you getting inspired, but certainly not by that pedal.

There is nothing wrong with liking gear, collecting it if that is your thing, talking about it... This is, after all, a gear forum, and that is why we're not selling our gear for a Walmart bundle. But let's not lie to ourselves.

You either have it or you don't, and no pedal will ever change that.

I'll just leave this here.

I applaud the spirit. I am kindred in some ways when it comes to this topic.
We are a self-indulgent, consumer, commodity driven culture and economy,
so it is an hard sell to suggest any other options then chasing more commodities. :idk

That said, I think it is always an healthy reminder that we can do a lot with less
and sometimes more is just a distraction and diversion from what we wanted
to do in the beginning when we were first "inspired" to play and make music.

I see it with infamous YT'ers all the time. They start to drown and become inundated
with new gear, and then they lose their "inspiration" and suddenly question their
direction, and whether or not that volume of Gear Churn that passes through their
hands is a good thing or not. It's utterly predictable at this point that they all have
these "crises" at some point. Or many points along the way.

Victims of our own success/excess, I suppose.

But yeah, this type of conversation will always provoke a bit of defensiveness in the culture
we are all immersed in right now. I suppose that's why I dig it. Go against the grain and
fight the current as others float merrily downstream.

Don Quixote would be proud!

It doesn't have to be an audio host, it could simply receive tuner data (detected pitch values) from the Helix. Afaik this is how Fractal's tuner works in Axe-Edit.
Am I a dumb-dumb or can you truly not access and view a tuner in HX Edit?

Correct, you can't. HX Edit isn't an audio host by any means, just control software.
Would be cool to have a tuner there, though.

Well, yes - but when you think about it, only sort of. Controller communication is one thing (and a must, of course), handling audio data streams something quite different. And to add the latter just for a tuner (and maybe some gain LEDs - which I would personally like to have here and there) might be too much of an effort. Which I can understand.

It may be able to do it. The Catalyst Edit has a built in tuner, so that may make it possible on HX Edit. @Digital Igloo could probably give us the info on it though.

Maybe more people need to request it.

I spent I think 3 years (2+ at least) gigging with a MIM Strat, crybaby wah, Zoom G2 and a Red Stripe Peavey Bandit. My entire rehearsal room was stolen years ago and I was in between jobs when it happened. I digress. Those were some of my most fun and memorable gigs. I also got way more compliments on my tone back then. Whether thats a coincidence who knows, but I try to remember those days when I get a little carried away with the spending and gear. I have also done a gig with two Joyo character pedals and a wah direct to FOH just to see if I could do it and be happy. My tone wasn't exciting me but the place I played at nobody turned their nose up at how I sounded, and they danced and partied the same as always out of the many times I've played there.

One of my first direct gigs was with a Tech21 British

I think I might have accidentally disengaged the cabsim button at one point

Just had a really fun few hrs matching the new Odr1 vs my self built clone and the new 2203 model vs the preamp in my jvm.

I've got the stomp in 4CM for this test.

I had to raise the gain on my Odr1 a bit more than the prize drive to match it's settings and the prize drive definitely has more low end in the stock setting than my self built clone. I got them both to sound really close to each other quite easily and if I was A/Bing 2 physical pedals I'd put it down to parts tolerances.

The 2203 and my jvm crunch red mode have wildly different settings but it was pretty easy to get them sounding really close to each other. A few times I caught myself adjusting one or the other before realising I was playing through the other one and I had gotten confused which is a pretty good sign to me that they were close enough. This was just at moderate house levels though, I'll give both the comparisons a proper blast at my band rehearsal on Thursday night. If I get a chance I'll do a quick and dirty A/B recording tomorrow.

This is the first update that I have not yet played through, and it's killing me! (In the midst of a move). Can't wait to get my hands on the JCM800 and the new amps reverbs and drive pedals, and the feedbacker! Been wanting that for years!

Question to folks who have been playing with the updates, do you think the JCM800 (Brit 2203) PREAMP block can be used to emulate a Blues Driver? It certainly sounds from the demos that it can. Curious to hear your thoughts!

You know what you need to do. Put that couch down and get to updating.

Ahh but the bands.. I'll take Kreator, Accept, Living Death and the Scorpions over Metallica all day every day.
