Fractal Talk

I'm not seeing the first video unfortunately 😧

It’s just the studio version of “Lie”

I just checked what I used for that Fear Factory cover I did, which is down in A, it was the FAS Modern III with the Horizon Precision Drive in front-

It's a 3rd party IR or I'd just upload the preset. The Horizon Drive cuts all the flub out, almost too much.

I didn't even think about the precision drive. At the end of the day I think it's also just that I'm still very much an amateur at playing 😂 and this isnt me just saying "woe is me". I truly hope to dedicate more time to improving my playing ability vs having to dial in a patch or have a certain piece of gear. Gear is fun and whatnot but for me it can be a distraction more than anything.

But anyway! Thank you for the suggestions!

That’s kind of what I dig most about the AxeFX, it sounds so good I don’t do a ton of tweaking or elaborate preset building. Shit just kind of slaps near the defaults.

Ok, it’s the honeymoon period for sure, but damn I think I’m home again.

I am a tweaker, I like having loads of power to tweak stuff just the way I want it. I don’t play with all the advanced parameters, but the ones I do care about I’ve just missed having that kind of control. Just feels like coming home when I have those things back.

This amp block is absolute 🔥

Doing stuff on the physical hardware though, :wat. I can make it work I think for basic stuff live with smart use of the performance page and scene controllers, but wow is it ever a bad time. If I’m feeling creative and want to try new stuff, the laptop is absolutely gonna be necessary.

If you have not played with it already, be sure to swap the tubes in whatever amp(s) you choose! I have spent HOURS playing with the tubes in the preamp and amp sections with glorious results to my ears!! Seems I am partial to JJ and Tungsten tubes. No matter what amp I choose, I always end up choosing a JJ or Tungsten tube. I have even done blind tests to ensure I was just not liking the names (not that I think there is anything exciting about either of those names) ;~))

Each Block has a lot of Parameters thats for sure but they dont need to all be touched or tweaked, that being said especially in the Amp there are certain very powerful advanced parameters that i use, also the Cab block as well, most of the other blocks i stick to the basic tabs
thing is with the fractal can be as easy as you like or you can def engineer it with deep parameters, all depends on the individual as to what they like

Ssssshhhhhh!!! We just managed to calm them all down!!!!

:rofl

It isn't absolutely abysmal. But yeah, I get you. If I'm feeling creative and what to just mess around, then editing on the front panel is a bit maddening.

But apparently we're just practicing and rehearsing wrong. :wat

I tried that on a whim quickly expecting it to not really do much, and I was wrong…. I put the Mullards back in and decided I’m not going down that rabbit hole right now :rofl

I know we've talked about plugins and audio interface input gain. But does this same idea apply to hardware running into an AI? For example, when running my axe fx 3 into the AI, I never know if I need to balance the gain on my AI with the output level of the III or should I turn the AI gain totally off and solely use the III output.

I'm assuming there is no right or wrong way but just curious

doesn’t really matter unless you were running into an analog modelled plugin and wanted it to behave exactly like a HW unit. In the real world you wouldn’t really worry too much about that unless it’s way too loud or too quiet. Most studio gear is designed to receive a variety of line levels so they’re generally less fussy than a guitar amp (which is only expecting a guitar signal and is amplifying a LOT).

Oh, it’s pretty abysmal I think lol. On the flipside, it’s crazy powerful so as long as I have tons of crazy ideas ready to go in some patch and accessible from a footswitch it will be fine. If I occasionally need to dial something in on the floor it can be done it just won’t be fun and will be a little frustrating.

My game plan is just to have lots of options in the patches that I can get to from the footswitches. With the block channels, multiplexers, footswitch capabilities, etc it’s not that hard to do that I think.

Awesome, thank you!

Fully understand! I explored it initially out of curiosity, also not expecting much!! I eventually went down the rabbit hole, but that was after I had my stuff figured out and wanted to get into some higher level tweakery (which I still have only scratched the surface of with this space station of a device). Now that I know what tubes I prefer, it is pretty quick and easy for me to choose a preferred tube when I am playing with a new amp or preset. Once you get your stuff to a good place, experiment with this feature using just an amp (no cab, no effects, etc.) to find the tubes of your dreams, and then make the tube(s) switch(es) in your preset(s). It really gave my presets an extra push that pleased my ears/brain ;~))
