Anybody else getting sick of modellers?

Plini was marginally better sounding, still modellers I believe but I think just the existence of a bass in the mix did wonders

Still sounded.. bad. hollow. sackless :idk

But yes I was at animals as leaders.
Note that I am a bedroom rockstar and obviously have nothing of note on animals as leaders

However, their gift of tone preset with fractal was very very thin and sounded rough. Not sure if that's truly how they model their live sound (and again I don't play on a stage), but just some food for thought. But who am I to bag on professional musicians 🫠

I've seen them several times before. I've always been disappointed with their tone live just so hollow, but last night was a new low even for them :(

Sorry for the drive by blanket controversial post, I was a bit tipsy

But yes I was at animals as leaders. 1k cap room. I've seen countless shows at this venue its not an inherently bad sounding room

But yeah, that sounded awful. Like really really bad :idk actively made the show hard to enjoy despite the virtuoso playing
Serious non-judgmental question: were you sober enough at the show to make an actual judgement? I don't care how intoxicated you were, but if there's one thing I've learned in life, it is that my opinions on aesthetics are very different depending on my state of non-sobriety.

Yes. It sounded really bad, I was with my band mates, some of whom were sober and they were also bummed about terrible it sounded

The biggest case of “Ya’ll need an amp onstage” I’ve witnessed so far was an In Flames show a year or two ago, all but one band had amps onstage and when the band using modelers went on, all the oomph and depth dropped right out of the sound. 500 seater venue, no amount of EQ or adding low end to the guitars would have fixed it.

It was that night I decided I’ll never play without a cab onstage.

Damn, didn't know in Flames made the switch. I saw them only once many years ago and they were still using 5150s. Sounded righteous. Even though the venue they were playing is notorious for sounding like crap

The curse of the snore-tap fest strikes again.

None of that music kicks ass in a live scenario. Give me Wes Borland ALL DAY ALL DAY!!

<ducks>

Not exactly the same but probably the best live sounding band of the virgin-prog-metal genre I've seen was The Safety Fire (actually at this same venue). I chalk that almost entirely up to the monster Sunn amp the bass player was using. Guitar players were both running Fractals, but none of this direct bullshit. Idk what type of power amp but they were going into mic'ed Zilla cabs. Sounded absolutely huge. I wasn't even that big of a fan of them prior to this, but after that show I was pretty blown away

I agree though, Wes Borland is a kimng

One of their guitar players I believe is playing modelers while the other has a 3x Synergy rig now with OS and 6505 modules.

Better stoned than drunk, for listening to music😬

I saw Tesseract live once. Might've been where I was in the venue, but guitars didn't really impress me that much. I could hear them sure, but they didn't sound big and punchy. Just kinda flat.

I've seen a UK band who I'm mates with called Din of Celestial Birds, and one of their guitarists uses Helix live. Always sounds pretty damn huge to be honest. Now they've got 3 guitarists, and only 1 of them uses modelling I think, so that probably biases the story a bit!

Most of the bands I've seen and played with have used valve amps; lots of Orange, Marshall, Matamp, Laney, Mesa, EVH Fender, Fender combos, yknow the usual crop.

I've only seen tesseract once, the show was great but their tone was thin and wimpy compared to Intronaut/cloudkicker who played before them with all their les pauls and mesas
