My impression is that your son is more interested in the guitar than just the Dad factor. Reason is because of his music choices and his attitude about the same. That said, if you were to start playing Mariah Carey's Christmas song, he actually may tolerate it out of respect for his Poppa ;~))
I recently played the Pignose guitar with the built in amp. It was a riot for me! It may be a bit heavy for a child though, but I thought it was a well done travel guitar with built in amp and only one knob (pull/push to turn on/off - turn for volume level). Ukulele would be my other suggestion (4 strings easier than 6).
A friend of mine made a comment that I think applies as well. He said "All musicians are drummers at heart". That was 40 years ago and I have carried that thought with me and believe it 100%. Reason being, without the beat, music does not exist, even when there is no drums, there is still the beat and I personally believe that is the first foundation any young musician should be tutored in (if even necessary). So what I am moving towards here is, possibly also getting him some small bongos, maracas, tambo or other percussion instruments to jam with Dad (full drum kit unnecessary at this point IMO). Here the "be with Dad" factor could turn into some very special moments. Be sure to have a phone or other device handy for those moments so you can get some simple recordings of those times that you would like to capture and preserve ;~))
Best wishes to you and your son on your musical journeys!
