Would you buy a guitar for your two year old?

Imagine how SICK a pair of Oakley Blades would look with that Parker
80S Dancing GIF
Although... Oakley Blades would go well with the Corvette I'd have to buy lease after my wife threw me out for buying my 5 year old a $10K guitar for Christmas.

Hell yeah! But he sounds like he's very smart, so I would ask him if he really likes the guitar, or if it's more because he likes it because it's what you like.

If he has his own, independent of your, interest in the guitar, I'd take him shopping to help decide on the size. And maybe, since he's into buttons, he'd also like some gear to go along with it. You never know..., maybe this early interest in the guitar/buttons ends up morphing into something along the lines of sound engineer.

But yes, it is early, and kids' interests can and do change, so certainly keep that in mind.

Either way, sounds like you have a great kid!! :beer :rawk

In my opinion two is a bit young -- I'm thinking toy xylophones and things like that....
But maybe one of those 3-string Loog guitars would work as a low-frustration starter? I have no idea whether they're any good but they've been around awhile now.

As for our experience...Yes, we bought a Squier mini-strat for our kids....Absolutely no one ever did anything with it. No one ever asked for lessons, or asked me to show them anything. Somehow, it survived being shoved under beds and thrown in closets and yet it's still in great shape; I gave it a setup and for awhile it was my travel guitar....they're pretty decent!

You just never know what they'll be into it, and for how long. One of our five turned out to be incredibly talented at drums -- but he could care less about playing them. :-( Maybe once a year he'll get out the kit and we'll jam together....it's always bittersweet for me because it's a LOT of fun and yet I know he's going to go another year without touching the sticks again....

Come to think of it, I got overzealous and bought my wife a Fender acoustic at one point, too. No one ever touches that one, either. And you can't sell "your wife's guitar" even if she barely remembers it exists, so hooray, another decoration.

Yep, totally forgot our daughter bought a shiny new Yamaha acoustic some years ago.....and has never played it. At least that was with her own money, but I hate seeing a good instrument go unused..... I tune it periodically, and as we all know, that can take up to an hour.... :rawk

I bought my 6 year old a guitar, and while it was a complete waste of time and money, I told my wife a great 2nd guitar for him will be a PRS 40th Dragon.
Forget the PRS. I want to hear all about that Jem. How did you wind up with a real Jem neck on an acrylic body? Pretty wild.

It’s a Jem 20th brotato.

LOL @brotato. Thanks for the pics! I totally forgot this guitar existed. What's the acrylic like in terms of tone? I assume the guitar is substantially heavier than basswood or alder?

While I was Googling acrylic guitars earlier, I found these guys doing cheap knockoffs. So cheap it may be an outright scam:

I bought a Loog for my kid's third birthday. It was often strummed, but didn't lead to any interest in learning chords or melody. I'm still holding out hope for the teenage years.

It is heavy as shit and sounds fantastic. I need to do another tapped sweeps video with it.

The sooner the better. :cheers

A second language is a great idea, too.

I bought my Son (now about to turn 19) a Junior Acoustic and tuned it to
an Open Chord. Mostly for my own sanity. :rollsafe

He has a big boy acoustic now.

Nurture what they love, no matter what it is. That's why we parent. :beer

You are a bit overthinking this, but that is okay.
I noticed a lot of good parents overthink a bit when it comes to their children.

For context: I have a 7 year old and a 4 year old. So 2 years old is not that long ago.

First of all, I found this sentence beautiful: "I suspect that what he likes about playing with my guitars has more to do with spending time engaged with me and playing with the things that I value rather than a genuine desire to make music himself."

Because that's the truth. Often they want to spend as much time with dad and mom as possible. Hence the trouble with going to bed sometimes. Its a conflict of interest.

My son used to get between me and my guitar physically, because he seemed a bit jealous.

Then came "blues clues" (a kid show on TV) where the dude plays the guitar in the intro. He would point at it, so we bought him a toy guitar. Every time blues clues would be on.. he would run to that guitar.. pick it up.. and "play"

Both like to touch the strings of the real guitar and see what sounds come out of it and after some years, we bought him a "real" children guitar just for fun. Some weeks... he does not look at it at all (his sister has zero interest) and then he picks it up again.. and plays with it a lot.

Children are pretty good in just doing what they like and ignoring what they don't like lol

So go for it !! It doesn't seem like you push your child into anything!!

The story about Keith Richards not being allowed to pick up grandpa's guitar. That is stimulation at it's best.. or manipulation (can't look in the brain of grandpa Richards. Maybe the guitar was just very expensive). What you seem to be doing is buying something your kid seems to enjoy and who knows!!

Thanks for all of the thoughtful replies. We have decided that we are going to get him a guitar. Now I have to figure out which one.

If you have recommendations on a reasonably quality (actually holds tuning) 1/2 scale acoustic feel free to share. I'm open to both nylon stringed instruments and steel stringed instruments.

Be careful with the plastic string ones, they go broken in a day. Especially pay attention to the tuning. That’s where the cheaper ones break really quick.

You might want to consider an entry level ukulele.

Find a Squire mini Strat S/H and see how it goes. The other one is the Yamaha Guitalele acoustic but you will have a better life with the Strat and no amp, plus it’s more inspirational.
They are both cool though;

That was sold on EBay for £30 and you can definitely play them.

And you can stand in front of a mirror with this one, about £70 used.
Whatever gets his interest going.
