Video Games

For sure, I absolutely recognise that other people do like to dip in for quick sessions - I just like to wait until I have a chance to really spend some time in the game because the atmosphere and exploration is my favourite part. :)
No argument there. :)

And one could also make the case that Elden Ring demands somewhat longer sessions than previous Soulsborne games, simply because of its whole "absurdly large open-world" thing. You can spend quite a bit of time just riding from point A to point B (to point C, etc.) trying to work out what's next.

Nostalgia!!

Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration (Nintendo Switch) Score: 9.5/10

Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration isn’t just a treasure trove of hard-to-find titles, it’s a love letter to gaming’s history. Besides simply playing these classics — some of which have been updated with improved graphics — you get a rich history lesson about the company. Candid interviews provide a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at what it was like working at the company and give you insight into the development of these older games. This context allows you to view these classics in an entirely new light.

Pretty cool.

Elden Ring update: finally found out how to get into the Raya Lucaria Academy and explored most of that while also beating the boss.
Probably the coolest boss fight I've seen in a game for a long time (maybe ever??)

This game is awesome when it isn't crashing.
I love FromSoft, but they really need to hire some devs that give a shit about PC one of these days. I'm not going to buy a PS5 just because they couldn't be bothered to optimise for more than one platform. Grr.

I thought I posted here about it, but I’ve been playing God of War Ragnarok the last few days. The last GoW was the first one I ever played and I fell in love with it; I love anything to do with ancient ruins and LOVED how they infused mythology into it all. Ragnarok is basically the sequel, picking up a couple years where GoW left off. It’s been fun but hasn’t had me drawn in like the first one did. The first one spent a lot of time looking back at the character’s histories/mythologies as where this one is moving forward a bit more with less mythology involved.

Gameplay/mechanics is still great, one of the things I loved about GoW; when you’ve got those wrist blades on and you’re just wrecking enemies it’s a blast and one of the few games I’m actually learning the button combinations to specific moves instead of just button mashing. The further along you go and more you learn/build/pick up the more fun it gets.

The one benefit of the storyline not drawing me in as much as that I’m taking my time and doing all the side missions instead of blasting through the story. I’ve always been terrible about that because I get so wrapped up in the story.

I know watching all this footage of that era of video game design is going to wake the Godzilla-sized Shoulda Coulda Woulda monster that lurks inside my head, but I have to pick this up sooner or later. I got into programming (and my subsequent "meh" career) by developing video games (non-professionally, alas) in the early-to-mid 80's.

I thought it was going to be super dumb, but started playing it to check out appropriateness for my kids...but holy hell did the story line of the Horizon games pull me in. I usually get burnt out on open world type games and throw in the towel way before completion but I mowed right through both of those.

Also, for all you GTA peeps (though, honestly, the hole clip is worth watching):

I can’t watch the vid right now, but I’ve been thinking about trying to make some side cash by doing scoring for stuff like this. There’s a TON of YouTubers who use open world games to make their own movies/skits with. Some are so damn good they don’t need any assistance with scoring/music, but others it could definitely be a benefit.

Also, GTAV is the greatest video game ever created and I‘m slight ashamed at how many hours I’ve sank into GTA Online because it’s embarrassing for an adult. (It’s just under a full year of actual playing time).

I just started Forbidden West yesterday, loved Zero Dawn. And yes, I don't usually care about storylines, but the Horizon one is really great sci fi.

Kinda envious of those PS titles… the kids wanted Xbox X (for reasons unknown….) but im the only one playing it haha.. oth I appreciate the Halo stuff as an old Halo nerd, and some other stuff. But man I wanted to play Horizon and also Death Stranding.

Waiting eagerly for Starfield though.

Been playing TMNT: Shredders Revenge with my son. Cool throwback to the old school arcade style TMNT from back in the 90’s. (And sure as hell beats playing Minecraft or Fortnite for the 6,375th time)

Wow, this thread brought back some memories! I'm 55.5, so I go back to the early days - i.e. Pong. One of my brothers bought one of the boxes that would only play that, lol - got boring pretty quick. Also had a TI-99/4A, Atari 2600, Intellivision, Atari 130xe, Sega Genesis, PC, PS3, multiple Xbox and a Wii U.

I always liked PC games the best. I remember playing an early 90's turn based strategy game with a friend over modem! What a pain in the ass that way but it was revolutionary. Can't for the life of me remember the name of it though! It was sort of like Risk, oh well, I'm getting old. Maybe it was Command HQ? IDK.

I played lots of Wolfenstein and Doom, tons of Master of Orion (I loved the 4x space games)! Then came CnC Red Alert (see my avatar lol), CnC Generals, Total Annihilation and other RTS until Unreal came out. That game was a serious time suck for me, I used to play it 4 hours a night and was in one of the top clans and went to a couple of large LAN parties, lol how silly now that I look back! Didn't like Unreal Tournament as much but played it a good bit, also lots of Quake 2 - that game sure got your heartrate pumping heavily! Then Unreal 2 was pretty fun, but not as much as the OG Unreal.

Battlefield Vietnam was fun for a while, tried some of the newer BF's afterwards but none sucked me in quite the same. Struggled through WW2 Online for a while, was fun but glitchy as could be.

Probably forgetting more than a few! As mentioned above, I've had 3 Xbox but never could get into them - everything bored me to tears.

I was in a Quake clan for a while with the capture the flag mod. We had weekly practices and online tournaments. It IS crazy to think back to that time and the hours spent (wasted?) on video gaming. But it was fun. And really the first socially-interactive video game I got into.

Far Cry 5 on PS plus extra is cool so far. I didn't like the Far Cry 6 demo.

One of my most time kills so far is Dying Light 2.

Dying Light 1 is cool too but dated.

And yes GTA V is sweet. Have like 2 missions to complete the main.

I’m replaying Metal Gear Solid 2 for the first time in like 15 years!

My original PS2 copy won’t work, so I had to resort to emulation on my PC. It’s running really well so I’m happy.

I’ve got my original copies of MGS1 and 3 (my fav) at the ready as well to play on the legit hardware when I’m done with 2.
