I'd be checking deeper than just popping in another fuse and hitting "Go!"

There's a reason the fuse blew and it was not because a fuse goes bad.

Also, preampers are not high enough voltage to smash a fuse, that is going to be
on the power amp side. If I replace a fuse I am going to have new power tubes on hand,
just in case, at a minimum.

Yea I have a set of tubes and 10 fuses so I "could" waste a few testing.

Maybe there is some bad juice in them Colorado power lines. Just sayin'.

I have a power conditioner and it's in my office so behind a UPS for more conditioning and surge so it should be good but yea WTF.

It’s still at my drummers, bringing it back home after practice tomorrow and will start the internal investigation over the weekend

Might pull the chassis too first to at least check there’s no like visual scouring or anything like that. That would be the extent of what I could do internally though

So… just another thought. My V has been on gig probation for a few months now due to a suspected channel switching relay issue. But that shouldn’t have caused a fuse to blow right? Especially with the context…. (Text wall below)


So starting maybe back in August started having an extremely intermittent channel switching issue. Sometimes when going to channel 1 from 2/3 the lights on the amp would properly indicate channel 1 but I’d get 0 sound. This would be remedied by going back to another channel and then back to 1. I suspected it might be a footswitch issue, but I didn’t want to drop $200 on a full blown foot switch (and I also tried different DIN cables and ruled that out) so I grabbed a aftermarket 1/4” footswitch and this seemingly solved the issue for a long time, but after a while I continued having the same intermittent issue even with 1/4” switching

Anyone with more brains than me know if a bad relay could potentially be related to a fuse blow out ??

However, I’ll add, on Sunday when this happened there was no footswitch connected period. The amp was just set to channel 1 and was working fine (albeit with the described “wooly ocean noise floor”) for a couple hours before failure

Anyone with more brains than me know if a bad relay could potentially be related to a fuse blow out ??

I would try to get factory service on this one if possible. They are complicated and I wouldn't necessarily trust a "local guy".

My plan is to check the chassis for any visual scoring, then try new power tubes/fuse

Failing that, while I do have “a guy” there’s also a handful of authorized Mesa techs local to me. Probably won’t be shipping anything of to Petaluma considering both the added shipping costs as well as their current lead times

Started to investigate this morning, it did appear that a couple of the power tubes were not like totally in the sockets all the way… not sure if that would cause the problem or not, it wasn’t significant but could visually see a little bit of pin


I realized none of my fuses on hand are 4A though so I can’t even test a new quad yet.

Wish I could still just go to a radio shack and grab some fuses same day rather than having to order online

In other news, was recording some stuff earlier, blending mark IV and 5153 L/R high gain tracks rhythm. A/Bing them honestly the mark IV made the EVH sound pretty bitch-made

The pairing together sounds fucking righteous though!!

Not a matter of easier. To record or not, just similar conditions today the IV stomped it imo lol

Well I got my fuses late in the week, finally took some time today to start to mess with it. I got 10 fuses so figured I could test a bit to find a bad tube rather than replace the set but when I looked at the tubes one looked like what you saw @spawnofthesith where it was not all the way in, pushed it and checked the others, swapped the fuse and all is good. Figure if it pops another I will go ahead and swap tube just because I have no clue what year my V is and/or if it's fuses were ever changed. When I bought my Dual Rec it came with a full set of Mesa tubes so I have a good set of power tubes, just want to save them for actual bad tubes if I can to save a few hundie!

nah none of those things actually, both signals were being castrated by a load box and IR so none of that applies
