I am really, really happy with how this mix turned out. First time that's happened. I think I may have finally found the tones that work for my kind of mixing (i.e. really bad and old school sounding).

Still, for an oldie like this, it really came out quite well, I think.

Also, unlike the original, I am playing in Drop D.

PS: Youtube appears to have ruined the audio with compression. I am attaching the audio file here for anyone who is interested. It's a OneDrive link.

I'm still pluggin' away on this Gilmour cover. I want to see how much I can complete it by Friday before I post the whole thing, but here's a clip from the solo section I started learning/dialing in last night.

Trying to get as close as I can to that tone and......I'm probably about as far as I'll be able to get it.

(timestamped to the solo)

That's super soulful! I wish I had tone in my fingers, but mine just make the fretboard shriek and groan at very odd moments.

What are using, amps/modeler/plugs?
I started recording all my guitar tracks DI into Reaper, then I run the signal back out my audio interface into whatever gear I wanna try..

For the early VH, what seems to get me the closest is my JCM-800 (which has all the documented early Van Halen mods/idiosyncrasies), a Scumback BM-75 speaker, SM-57 mic.. but then new thing I tried here is, I built a clone of a Neve 1073 mic preamp and put a little "heat" on the signal coming out of the mic.

Focus - Hocus Pocus Test

All guitars - no Thijs van Leer. Partial tune.

Backing tracks:

I have always loved that song! Thanks for sharing that!! Any details you can share on your yodel simulation for guitar? I would love to be able to get some similar tones on my guitar. I use almost exclusively the Axe FXIII, so if there is anything you can point me to that would help me to get close to that, I would appreciate it! Great job!!!

I wasn't going for a direct 1-to-1 yodel sound, but more interpretation. Not too difficult and basically mixing 2 tones together; bridge pickup & neck pickup... both playing separate parts. Surprisingly, there is a distinct vocal quality happening.

-Guitar was Gibson CS '08 1961 LP/SG Custom with Seth Lovers set (PAF).

- '68 Plexi 50W circuit (with .68uF on V2 - hotter plexi) with Vol 1 at "8".

-No boosts.

-Suhr RL Line Out into DAW with Bridge part (see below) using Greenback iRs, Neck part (see below) using Blackback iRs.

-A little Pultec EQing (slight hi pass, some 500Hz solo "vocal-y" warmth, some brightening @ 6KHz).

-Panned the 2 tracks partially L & R (50% IIRC).

-Add a little micropitch (very little modulation) for wide stereo effect, some dual delay (250ms L, 400ms R) and some spacious plate reverb.

(I'm going to revisit this yodeling part and pan different; more like the record with him (Thijs) on far L and reverb on far R)

Very cool! Thanks for all the details, I am going to give this a try!!

#original-song

Just a down and dirty, quick idea from last night. Maybe will add a melody at some point but it's fine for now. Did a 1 take solo at the end though.
Probably should have spent more time on the mix and all, but oh well. It's been a long week and I'm tired.
