I took my first stab at creating a NAM capture. This is a 1000 epoch capture of my Mesa Boogie Studio Preamp through the power amp of my Mark III head. Its a direct capture - 1960A cab as the load captured through the Mesa's slave out.

No reflection on anyone here creating these captures, but I downloaded NAM a couple days ago and have tried like 20 random captures off ToneHunt.com and .. well, they sound like crap.

Compared to what ?

I'm comparing them with the 3 Neural DSP amp sims I have - which sound awesome BTW.

Nature of the beast. Same reason why 95% of presets sound like ass too - there’s no context or intention with sounds so it’s always a bit of a lottery to whether it’ll match your needs.

Add in the fact that it’s open to anyone with any gear and any experience. You could have a tone dialled in from an amazing studio with high end gear, or it could be someone who doesn’t even own a reamp box. And neither are guaranteed to sound good to you.

Your best bet is to find people who dial in sounds you like, that where there’ll be some consistency with both the way they are captured and the types of sounds they gravitate towards.

IMHO NAM's strength is in being able to accurately profile your own gear.
The ones I did shoot turned out great (compared to the gear they're modeled after) but beauty is in the eye of the beholder so take that with a huge grain of salt.

I have a few folks who I follow and like their profiles but as @MirrorProfiles already stated, it's very easy to run into a lot of so-so profiles given the vast amount of them out there and the fact that some users have no pre-established workflow for reamping.

But am I to understand that you (and/or others) think these NAM captures sound like crap ?

Absolutely.

It’s nothing to do with NAM, you’d find exactly the same thing when trying ToneX/Kemper/Tonocracy/Tonehub. And as @2dor says - the real strength of it is when you capture your own gear, that way you know how you intend to use it and what it’s supposed to sound like and achieve.

I took a stab at using ToneZone3000's Wet/Dry capture of a Helix Native preset at 1000 epochs. The tone was there, but the capture had a very rough buzzy high end that was apparent when A/Bing and confirmed with a null test. Trying the standard capture method with 1000 epochs to see what happens.

Either way, this is really cool tech.

A few questions about the macOS version:

• Is it possible to do bulk uploads of NAM profiles or user IRs? I could not find a way, but I wanted to verify. If it’s not possible, are you considering adding this feature? In lieu of the feature, could files be copied into some application directory for bulk upload?
• Any plans for a file directory for user profiles/IRs?

This feature request is in the pipeline of the next update.

Wow, this is a really nice update! Just ran through the motions really quick and the delay is simple but pretty dang decent, the chorus works really well and very nice touch on the (real time) tuner.

I need to dig in deeper on the new amps and check MIDI implementation, but this is really nice as a standalone app. Kudos!

I have avoided giving exact number because what felt right for me to try to hit between a range and calibrate based on amp model response but I am pretty much convinced that this the way to go and will be included in the manual as well. 12dBu.
