Ive always viewed it as a non musical distortion characteristic that seemed to hang over the core amp tone.

You could hear it in the past when notes rang out and faded or in between palm mutes - both more noticeable when mid-to-high gain tones were used.

But yeah, this clip has limited dynamics - so there is that. But the existing HX SLO model is no pushover.

NDSP plugins are excellent despite their shitty ass business practices. The Mesa plugin is my go to whenever I feel like using a plugin instead of my amp

Yes, the NDSP plugin is good. They did a great job - that one is circuit modeled.

Their Mesa plugin is TOP NOTCH imo too. Despite their business practices etc, whatever, I have a blast with that plugin
