Is there a software on earth that is more of a PITA to install than Pro Tools?

I hate Avid. Unfortunately I have an old session that I did in Pro Tools years ago that I want to access. So I pay the ransom and now the hellish experience of trying to download and install the mess. Did I mention I hate Avid?

What’s the issue exactly?

It’s basically one installer that you download from your user area, like any other app. You only need to pay the “ransom” if you don’t own a perpetual licence (which will continue working forever), or if you’re on an OS that isn’t supported by that particular version of PT (in which case you pay for a years of updates).

Man don't even get me started. I have been using Pro Tools software and hardware since version 8 and have purchased each version. After they crippled the older versions and forced me to buy a subscription in version 12, my sub expired, and now for whatever reason, they will not upgrade me and I have to buy a new subscription and start from scratch. So like I said, I have some old sessions that I want to access and I purchase the new sub from the Avid overlords website. They tell me I need to install Avid Link to install the new software, ok so I do that and it starts to install and download a bunch of software that I really don't want or care about. After some searching I figure out that I can download the 6 GB installer. I do that and then discover that the Avid Link big brother thing already installed PT, with no indication that it was ever doing that. So that was about 2 hours of my life wasted but I finally got it up and running and was able to open my old PT sessions. All this time PT 12 is sitting there staring at me but I can't open it because it is expired on my ilok, even though I just purchased the new version. Also it looks like the new software requires an internet connection for some of the plugins to work. Ugh, what a pain.

If you have a friend with a working copy of Pro Tools, perhaps you can load the session & extract the stems?

I really dislike Avid, swore them off 15+ years ago, mostly after seeing multiple friends runnin' Pro Tool HD Audio situations getting screwed over, royally...o_O

Most Pro Audio people left Avid in the dust a decade ago...

Me, I switched over to Reaper & support them 💯, when necessary I'll run Cubase 8.5 which still does everything I need in an advanced DAW...

Nothin' worse than a muso corp. that has the morals/ethics of a crack dealer 🏴‍☠️

I switched over the Studio One Pro a few years back and I like it better than Blow Tools.
Thanks for the tip I'll take a look, as I'm also not supporting Steinberg after getting screwed out of a Cubase 9 update, because I didn't register it within "their" timeframe :facepalm

Mind you, I paid for updates regularly from Cubase 2.0 on, bought them outright when I had to...

Oh, I also bought a full version of Nuendo in 2010, when I was setting up a Post Audio Production company with a former partner/friend o_O
