IK Multimedia TONEX

Wow! Thanks! I don’t think ToneX was here before! Much appreciated!

You may still want to experiment with different input levels. The value you'll get out of the tool will likely work fine for anything straight from IK, but other captures may sound overgained. Unfortunately, required input levels are all over the place. I usually find some decent values, though.

I'm going to watch the video but up until now, I keep my interface (id44) at 0db and the tonex software at 4.6db. I do this just to match the audio sample file 'gritty' on any patch with my own playing on the same patch.

As said before, all the internal player's files are leveled extremely high (peaking very close to 0dB), and I don't think it sounds great with quite some of the models I've downloaded.

I usually keep the gain on the amp sim knob between 9 or 10 oclock. right or wrong, I get what I'm looking for. Past noon is unusable for high gain captures, I just usually set it to where I no longer hear a difference. Sometimes that's at 2 depending on the capture.

After watching that video, I'll try to beef up my signal and reduce on the plug in to see how that fares.

I've been messing around with the Tone X One and really enjoying it for what it is.

I have it running into a strymon Flint and El Cap and the output is my headphones. Unfortunately it's mono out. Is there anyway to make it stereo that I'm missing?

the output on tonex one is trs. if you plug in headphones and use a ping pong delay you should hear stereo

Sadites uses a y connector to feed his interface.

I had an hour totally evaporate on me tonight plugging into the pedal and jamming on some of the Mesa reference collection. Seems to happen every time I fire it up.
I'm sure I could look back but did you get the One or full phat Tone X?

But yeah, if you find a good profile/capture, it's stellar and just fun to play

Similar experience here. I've found one somewhat fuzzy Dumble capture, used one of my favourite IRs instead of the embedded cab (which worked amazingly great) and from then on used nothing else but that for around an entire day of playing. Reacts incredibly well to playing dynamics, so nothing else but a little delay here and there was needed.

I have both. I grabbed the full size CB pedal way back at launch, and then snagged One to get into the group buy. Both are very robust feeling pieces of hardware.

Any preference?

I want to like the bigger one but it has the most shit tier operation for anything that doesn't exist on the two tiers of knobs. Painstakingly scroll params one by one, then open it for adjusting, then back out of that, scroll again...

IK had multiple knobs right there that could be mapped to further layers of 5.

Even the "hold for alt" is bad user experience. I really wish they went back and revamped the onboard operation.

Midi was the deciding factor for me. The original can be controlled by another (more ergonomic) pedal

I haven't spent enough time with One to provide a useful answer but I will say the solidity of the One surprised me. Both pieces of hardware seem robust.

I use the full pedal pretty much daily now and its grown on me. All your critiques of the design decisions are valid, but because Tonex sounds so good and feels so good to play I give it a pass. Only time will tell if the One will overtake the full size. I edit mostly from my computer anyway, so it probably just comes down to whether I need more than two presets for a given situation.

Alrighty, I've been dipping my toes back into capturing some of my amps and humbly submit a small batch for my friends here. For those with hardware, these are setup to translate accurately to the Tonex harware with trim at 0.

  • 1998 revision G Dual Rectifier
  • fresh caps
  • fresh JJ EL34s
  • Solid State Rectification
  • Bold switch
  • Tung-Sol in V1
  • a whole lot of attitude.

If you like Rectos, you will probably enjoy some of these. If you are Recto-curious, start with the crunch patches, plug in single coils and roll your guitar volume down a touch, there are nice shades of gain and compression in there.

Details:
I captured the amp through a Suhr RL direct via a Presonus Quantum 2626. I won't make any grand statements about quality, this was the result of a test working out levels and seeing how the various channels and modes responded to my reamping chain. I like some of these better than others, but I think it captures a decent summary of the amp.

Hope you all enjoy!

ToneX Pedal + Stomp + PA = SUCK

I started an acoustic project with a singer from another band today and I hooked up to their PA system today and it was great when using just the ToneX but when I tried to turn on an OD on the stomp, it was Shitty Sizzle City (Say that 3 times fast). Sounded great at home through my amp but going straight into the PA it was horrible. Even when the gains and volumes on the Tonex pedal, stomp, PA, and/or guitar were all turned down in various combinations all I got was lower volume suckness...

At home though my Origin 50H amp either into the return or running 4CM, no issues other than volume differences, but plugged into the PA, I could not get a good edged of breakup to save my life.

So, should I just find more captures, EOB, clean, crunch, captures that could work or can I use my stomp for effects only. Also to add to the equation, most songs I am using my acoustic electric, but some songs need to be done with an electric so that also adds to the difficulty.

Any suggestions, hints, tips from any of you using a stomp with tonex? Should I just use my amp, mic it, and say fuck it? I would rather make this project as light in gear as possible, but if so, what mic would be best in this situation for a cover project with everything from Brown Eyed Girl & Margaritaville to Cumbersome, Own Worst Enemy, etc.

Thanks for any advice!!

A free Marshall JTM 50 capture from Amalgam, this one here it seems:

But I replaced the cab with an IR of my own that I brewed together a long time ago.
And I took the gain back quite a lot so it was almost completely clean.

I may try that capture for my EOB tone for some of the songs I am working on with this new project.
