IK Multimedia TONEX

The BE-OD is a little more picky about the amp/amp model you run it into - anything super scooped like a Fender Twin sounds terrible, but something with good mids sounds awesome.

I've always been running it into rather mid-heavy things - and well, the sound was actually fine, but I always found it to be to spongy, forgiving too much, not tight enough, whatever. But the Tonex patch I used (which even had the compressor dialed in a bit) was almost doing wonders. Quite amazing, really.

I made a separate thread about my Tonex v2 extended captures here, if anyone is interested:

Must be the weekend for it, also knocked up a "How well is ToneX V2" video. TLDR its a massive update in terms of capture results and capturing workflow. It's gone from uninstalled to "this is pretty damn good", big turnaround. The results are pretty much splitting hairs with NAM now.

I've uploaded 45 captures like in the video to Tone3000 (NAM) and ToneNet... grab the caps and/or watch the video if you want to see them in action. But yeah, well done to IK. I only wish it launched this polished, but we're here now at least

I like your videos. You have this nice energy about you.

The only note I would make is that I don't think V2 fixed gain mismatches. When I capture and compare to original, I still see a difference, at least over here.

But it doesn't matter much to me because it's easy to compensate if needed, and it works.

Thanks man. I wasn’t sure if ToneX people even cared about gain staging really, a lot of nam guys are all over it. These ones here are done to +13dBu if that helps.

And yeah that’s another reason I did those capture packs in stepped gain levels. Just helps people flick through and find their sweet spot.

In terms of browsing other people’s captures I also find it hit and miss, I typically just stick to my own stuff or packs from 2dor / mirrorprofiles / slamminmofo, anyone who generally gets the stuff right. But just cruising tone3000 or tonenet, I don’t really do it.

Btw heads up to live ready studios for their rockeverb V2 pack. You can get near identical sounds with fractal devices, if you know how (just tried this), but these are the best rockeverb captures I've played on the tonex ecosystem.

Fwiw, it's quite stunning just how much of a quality difference there is between free captures on ToneNET. Sure, there's certainly some input leveling issues involved, especially in case people are only using the plugin with no experience how to set your input gain, but as I always give them the benefit of a doubt I quickly grab my interface's input trim, which I've set to offer leeway in either direction for these testing purposes (the pot sits around 50cm away from my right hand) - and even with that, there's some patches making me go WTF?!? all the way. I often don't even get the intended purpose of some captures. I mean, there's amps that should sound as thick as it gets, and the capture sounds like a broken toy amp.

And it doesn't even stop there, similar things can be said about some of the IK collections. I just redeemed every single one of them due to their groupbuy, and I'm absolutely undwhelmed by all of the Brown Sound collections. They're pretty noisy and kinda fizzy, too. Maybe it's my guitars and me not being EvH, but still, I expected more. Otoh, the Alex Lifeson collection has some gems and a handful of high gainers that are surprisingly low-noise-ish.

Maybe all that goes to show how a unified capturing procedure would help on all accounts.

I like EVH tones a lot, even if not for EVH style playing. But if you are used to different kind of tones, it's going to be quite a jump.

I am finding that there is often quite a large volume difference between the tone models as they are untouched on a fair few of the tonex signature collections.

I wonder if IK will upgrade those to Tonex V2, if they have the dry tracks.

If you don’t think the EVH packs capture the EVH sound, I think there is a problem somewhere on your end, or Eddies tone just isn’t to your taste.
Yeah I do like the Brown sound packs. They have a "chewiness" (good ol tone description language) to them that I haven't quite seen replicated in digital gear.

I could see how someone wouldn't like them though, they are pretty unique imo
