IK Multimedia TONEX

Yeah at the end of the day a hot rodded marshall I'm sure!

I love Amalgam but their super high gain/modern gain packs are a tad lacking. They made a 5153 pack and from what I saw didn't have one profile that has a boost out front 😮 not that it can't be easily corrected and does add for more flexible but still
Good to know about the high gain stuff… I hadn’t tried any of those yet. You just saved me $$!

The Dragon definitely has something unique going on. I don’t want to get too wordy now and I’d rather let the clips speak for itself, but it’s pretty killer and didn’t strike me as the typical modded Marshall, it’s much thicker and any hair was replaced with wool. The JVM caps also had me noodling way past my bedtime.

Edit- I will say that after playing the Dragon caps, I realized why Satch didn’t end up with Friedman for a sig amp. I thought it was going to be much closer to that ballpark, but that’s not what I heard or felt when playing them at all.

I will say I feel like some Tone X capture have an inherent "woofiness" to them. (See my previous post about getting amusement in people describing guitar tone)

I don't really have a way to setup having a boost in front (which is almost always a must for me) but I was curious if anyone had a similar experience.....or maybe it's a "huh, this is what an unboosted amp sounds like" moment

That explains why you didn’t like that Amalgam had no captures with drives. I thought you had a QC?

If you know anything about me is that I'll try anything and everything (multiple times at that!).

I've been trying Tone X again for kicks, especially with the brown sound pack. I do have ways to put a boost in front I guess if I combine certain rigs. It's getting the motivation to do such a thing

They really dropped the ball with not being able to add a drive capture in addition to an amp, or at least a basic boost effect

To my ears nam and tonex capture amps a fair bit better when there’s no boost imparted on them. I’ve always had better results doing separate captures and stacking them. ToneX also struggles to capture really high gain so slamming a tubescreamer in front of an amp is just a double whammy of asking for dud ToneX captures ime. Probably why you don’t see it at a high level or if you do you’ll play it and think… I swear this should be more gainy than this (probably because the capturer tamed the settings and then the capture also came out a notch less gainy than whatever settings they used).

There are multiple ways to add a boost effect. You can adjust the input trim for a global boost, the preset gain for a preset by preset boost, and your u can also use the compressor before block before the amp. Using a boost pedal intro got the hardware works great as well.

To add to that even, I like preamp only captures going into the return of my amp's fx loop.

I get that for sure, but I am a fan of NMV amps with power section distortion, so I want to capture that and play it back at whatever volume I want. Oh, and not necessarily quieter since I currently have a big old 210 watt McIntosh sitting on my work bench! :D

Fwiw, as I purchased IK Studio Max a while ago, I also have access to Tonex Max. My audio interface is pretty decent for amp sim usage (good Hi-Z ins and super low latency on the Motu M2).
Yet, I haven't once even just loaded a single Tonex capture.
WTF is wrong with me?

I just captured my JCM800 2203 patch from Fractal, which I realize is modeler inception to a degree. But being able to record a DI track and apply stuff after the fact (in the absence of a Fractal plugin) is quite cool. Plus, I can use those tones on my..........lowly iPad with Logic.

:D
