IK Multimedia TONEX

I just captured my JCM800 2203 patch from Fractal, which I realize is modeler inception to a degree. But being able to record a DI track and apply stuff after the fact (in the absence of a Fractal plugin) is quite cool. Plus, I can use those tones on my..........lowly iPad with Logic.

:D
Probably sounds better than half of the 2203 captures on TONE.NET huh?

My best friend, who was a big reason I started playing when we were 11, hasn’t really done anything with “music” in a long time, but he got Garageband on his iPhone and has this sleep tracker that records audio when it detects him making noise and every couple months we get about 15-20 seconds of farts he’s taken from the tracker and organized into a song.
Thus proving that our genius is not in our tools, but how we apply them.

You can remove the cabs right? It just isn't the greatest via that method

IK’s algorithm to «remove» the cab from a full amp+cab capture will not be the same as a real DI capture of the exact same signal chain but with the DI signal tapped from the speaker output (with the speaker being the load).

What I want in an ideal situation is full captures supplemented by DI captures of the exact same signal chain but with the DI signal tapped from the speaker (with the speaker being the load). I’d like to have an IR of the cab in that setup included as well.

I was actually just telling someone that the only reason I haven’t fired it back up is because the software discussion around it and I know that if I turn it on and run into an issue, it’s likely I’ll never use it again, for much of the same reasons Andy mentioned in that vid, I have stuff I can turn on and it’ll do it’s thing immediately.

I do recall them updating it and a few people mentioning the improvements, but I haven’t checked it since and maybe the other capture devices that have come out since have stolen some of the attention away from people writing home about the improvements to the software.

I want to try those Dragon captures once I can start spending money on fun stuff again and it’s the only capture platform I’ve had any interest in.

The Dragon captures, are killer!

His criticisms of IK and UA are unwarranted especially when there’s plenty of warranted stuff on the table.

My ToneX captures are still hit and miss and they take 30-35 mins a pop (with a 3090 gpu) whilst NAM remains perfect 95% of the time. They also don’t have any kind of batch processing and a few creature comforts that NAM has caught up on. I did about 20-30 captures reamping the NAM file through an amp, exporting the files then uploading for batch processing and checking it an hour later. In comparison to do 2 ToneX captures I had to sit and wait for it to finish before I could do the next one.

I don’t find it enjoyable to dunk on things but it’s kind of disappointing to see the lack of advancement in these areas from IK. They’ve clearly made tons of revenue off this product and it’s been out for years. It’s kind of baffling how capturing is still so rudimentary, time consuming and a crap shoot on results. These are all probably simple things to fix but nothing has advanced.

*Edit*
I still recommend their pedal for people wanting a cheap way into this kind of thing. If I was just a player looking for a pedal it’s good enough to do the job and extremely affordable. Again, it’s just annoying that contributing to this ecosystem is a bit of a punish and results are so/so. If my results were consistently good and they had batch processing I’d be 2 feet deep into it, I just want them to do better 🤜🤛
I use your 5150 captures in Tonex and they are great! I highly recommend them.

May be inception -esque, but it still sounds really freaking good!

Yet, I haven't once even just loaded a single Tonex capture.
WTF is wrong with me?

We may have a remedy for that coming very, very soon. I know you're not a metal guy, but am I correct that you dig the SLO?
I moreso meant the use of Tone X in general 😀

Although Tone X gets a little too much hate here. I think it's pretty cool and sounds good

I'll certainly be using it more. I'm playing around with it right now to understand the UI a little better and see all that's going on in here, when I'm not getting lost noodling, but as of now this seems to me that it's everything it claims to be. While I don't care how accurate the knob turning is, I was still impressed with how turning the knobs responded how I assumed they would on an amp, not like turning the high end up with a basic EQ.

I would have to imagine that anyone who actually tries it out and maybe had access to some known great sounding profiles there wouldn't be a whole lot of criticism. I know I definitely went from skeptical to looking for more profiles in less than 24 hours.

I was writing, but better did this screencapture, please forgive me for the bad EVH chops but the screencapture software gave me horrible latency while recording. Volume was not match either as you can hear there is a discrepancy with the captured cab and the IR.

Well shit! Those IRs sound great! @nicolasrivera do you have a link to them?

I still think it's lost that you can snag the Tone X One for $150 and for us here on the digital forum, throw it in the loop of a digital unit we already have. I think it would be a cool companion for the FM9 or FM3
