I Gotta Wonder About Fractal's, er, "Perception"

guiWas your "never bought shit" tag under your name specially gifted to you by the mods?

This bit with Henning was gold. I really do appreciate that for better or worse he speaks his mind on virtually everything he tries (imagine having a personality and opinion). Pretty spot on here with the lack of touchscreen.

Of course!!! I buy stuff lately like acoustics and another electric( prs 24 satin which is a steal for 499$)
I just have not bought into the newest modrlers yet. But am getting ready to but the mpc live 2 + or mpc1+ to give to my gf for valentines day so she can make some dope ambient loops for when i play acoustic on the couch and we sing together

Also, Bernd Kiltz mentions how easy it is to navigate. Which it might be. But as said plenty of times by now: By now it's not just about how *easy* it is to navigate, it's as much about how *fast* it is to navigate.
You could for instance also say an SPX 90 is easy to navigate. Which it is. But is it fast? No way!

Nah. He's full of shit. Loads of gear still gets released without touchscreens. They're not a requirement, and they don't even particularly speed things up. After living with my 2nd Quad Cortex for quite some time now, I can honestly say that pretty much the only area where I even remotely give a shit about it is for naming presets when saving.

IMO it's a fair call, if you approach it as "this is a brand new 2024 device" rather than the "it's a derivative product of the current gen modelers" we know the VP4 is.

Even without a touchscreen, Fractal could have done much better with the UI and controls. I would have slapped 4 dedicated buttons on it that correspond to the 4 fx slots, and those would just open that slot for editing from any view. Or do that with clickable encoders. No enter-exit-scroll nonsense.

I agree with Sascha that Fractal is not solving "fast" for how to work with their box.
Line6 is kinda fast with the capacitive footswitches, and having just one type of view.

QC is fast by tapping a block and having so many encoders that paging is rarely needed, even if there is a bit of "which encoder I need to grab?" fumbling.

Hotone might be actually a bit easier because the screen is smaller so it's very quick to tap the desired thing without moving your hands much, and grabbing the right knob is easier. It loses some speed with the amount of paging on more complex blocks though, same as HX Stomp.

In the video you can see the G66 guy stumble in some list views because Fractal kept the "move by one row" behavior on the scroll knob which remaps all knobs by one. Why not move by 4 so the encoders are all reassigned to the next set of parameters, kind of like paging on a HX Stomp?

There's a lot that could be faster if Fractal took the time to identify where people start getting confused, and tried to improve those areas enough that the issue is reduced. That's much easier than adding a touchscreen UI.

Gasp award can only be received if you bought stuff, sold stuff, then bought the same staff again. I think he said on TOP he has lost thousands a year doing this.
I get flipping through gear because I have been guilty of the same and it’s been fun. Heck I’ve even owned the same thing a couple of times. BUT to own something like many multiple times to only sell and buy again asking the forums if you should is just a huge head scratcher. I’m sure he has lost a decent amount of money doing that. Honestly it sounds more like an addiction to buying things more than a tone or gear hunt.

Remember when he got all stressed out about the new tax forms and how he was gonna stop flipping gear because he was worried he might get audited?!?!?

Auditor: "You sir, are a complete idiot. Quite honestly, we may owe you money now that we've looked at your Reverb transaction history."

I'd be shocked if he hasn't been losing several thousand a year for years. It's not a WHOLE lot worse than other hobbies. its the need to rationalize everything and the refusal to just hold onto something that he knows he's going to need for that Potential Breakthrough Gig in two months time.

Boss managed to do that on the 15+ year old GT-10 and that feature is excellent to this day.

Please go and research how many devices in the music tech industry were released in 2024, and then separate them into two pools - ones with a touchscreen, and ones without.

Then realise that touchscreens are actually the outlier, and by and large, people don't want or need them.

as soon as there is any new gear released I know he will post a thread at TOP
New Toneking IRX he is trying to figure out how to make it work in 14 different scenarios, I have never seen somebody have an A rig a B rig ,a fly rig , and a practice home rig
