As a visitor in Japan you can avoid the 10% sales tax if you show your passport and are leaving in I think 60 days or something? It takes some time for them to take a copy of the passport, fill in some form etc but you can just look at other stuff while waiting.

At the airport there is supposed to be a customs stand where you are supposed to show the stuff you are exporting out of Japan, but whenever I've been there on all my trips to Japan, there has been nobody there. My last trip the person there just waved me to go past, but it was a very late flight, so maybe he just wanted to go home? I have no idea how the system is supposed to work but I made good use of the tax free.
