It's probably a combination of the snubber caps and the pot tapers.
Friedman likes snubber caps too, his amps also known to be dark/smooth sounding.
JVM410 too.

I think it's a bizarre fetish among modern amp designers, rolling off the highs in the preamp to make Vintage 30 record nicer with an SM57 at low volumes.

I personally don't like that either, I'll take classic Marshall sizzle over the modern polished darker voicing of it.

I think there's room in the middle. Bogners can be darker than I'd like but I think Friedmans are quite right. They generally sound like what people think a cranked Marshall sounds like, except Friedman can do it without the amp being cranked.

My BluGuitar Amp1 ME by comparison has a more old school Marshall voicing and it comes with complications. Too little gain and the bright cap can make it sound harsh and its otherwise extremely wide range EQ is not effective for controlling those specific frequencies.

The way around is to either run gain higher (less bright cap effect) and roll back guitar volume and tone, or you use the hidden gain range setting to tailor the max gain to something that works for you so you can run it at a higher gain setting, again mitigating the bright cap. Or you can just crank it to powertube distortion (and use the internal powersoak to reduce volume), that does the job too.

It must be a Brit thing because I read it exactly the same way 😂
What's the context of Whizzin beeeeeeee?

Americans tend to modify meanings for words or terms sometimes referring to more than one situation, scenario or thing.

In U.S. speak "Whizzinby", or "Whizzing" by would mostly be a reference to going fast/speeding by someone or something, passing someone very quickly from the commenters point of reference.

Additionally, to whiz is also a reference to urination or taking a piss - not the usage in this case.

Is this going to be on the test?

I like these quotes from Cliff Chase. Pretty much sums up my personal experience with Bogner amps:

“People think Bogners are dark but they really aren't. The reason they seem that way is the pot tapers. Most people assume knobs should be set somewhere around noon. If you do this on a Bogner it's like turning the treble way down on a Marshall. Close your eyes and adjust the tone controls with your ears. Don't be afraid to turn them way up or way down." [206]

"Human nature is to put the knobs near noon. We are reticent to deviate much from noon. Amp designers exploit this and use different tapers to change the sound of their amps WITH THE KNOBS AT NOON. A prime example are Bogner amps. Everyone says "Bogner amps are dark". No they aren't. But he uses a Log10A taper for the treble pot. It's a standard Marshall tone stack. Usually a linear taper pot is used for the treble. The treble knob at 5.0 (noon) on a Bogner is equivalent to the treble knob at 1.0 on a Marshall. People put the knob at 5.0 and go "wow, this amp is dark". No it isn't. If you turned the treble up to 8 or 9 it would sound a lot like a Plexi but humans are reticent to turn the knobs to extremes. Amp designers know this and exploit it to give their amps a "signature sound"." [207]

I’m not afraid to crank an amp to weird settings to get what I need from it, that’s exactly what I do. My problem is when I need to get near min or max to get my typical sound. Then you have nowhere to go. Use a darker sounding guitar or find yourself in a dark sounding room, and you’ve got a problem. I always want some extra headroom either direction on a control from my typical setting, and the more the better.

Those terms also translate to "British" English as well but I think I read it in an almost Appleby's sense. Words ending "by" are sometimes pronounced "bee" i.e. baby/chubby/gobby. Just my (admittedly Scottish) take on it 😂

Sorry for the derail, back to your Helixy goodness 🤘🏻

Helix has enough preamp models...
By the way, do you maybe have any tip and suggestion about how to use the Helix preamps as "ODs" in front of the Helix full amp sims?
In theory I thought it could be very nice to have any kind of flavor to be used in front of the amps, but after few attempts I gave up because the results were disappointing for me, but I don't know if I wasn't trying in the proper way, and maybe I should adjust some parameters in a different way from expected.

Separate poweramp block so I can create the perfect custom abomination.
Helix has enough preamp and poweramp models to create a F ton of new amps, and even model real amps that have 'standard' combinations etc.

I'd love power-amps too. I want to put my effects between the pre-amp and power-amp. After amp effects have fidelity but are a little flat, before amp effects have a nice sizzle and response but lose fidelity, in between should be just about perfect. Plus you can skimp by having one pre-amp, stereo effects and two power-amps.

In my experience, Bogner pot tapers are similar to those of a home stereo. I don’t think they are dark at all if you turn them past noon.
100% you can make them very bright if you crank the treble pres
Also the Bright switches, this is a good vid of the red I don’t find it dark
It has a low mid punch yes, the thing is also the feel no amp feels like that it’s unique , has a bounce and chew when you play it , it’s fun to play and very musical
