Fractal Audio Firmware Update Thread

We could probably fairly easily test the default mic position idea and how ‘worthy’ it’d be in use, we pick an amp and cab block, everyone here with an AxeFX downloads the preset, amp settings stay the same and we all pick the mic position we prefer and post the results. I’d be willing to bet they’ll be far enough apart that it’d be REALLY hard to pinpoint a specific spot.

A microphone dead on the centre of a speaker usually sounds too bright and shitty. Only Steve Albini wants that. I think a sensible default is where the cap meets the cone, which I assume is the new default values? Haven't checked tbh.

It's all about how quickly you can get good results and how easy it is for new users to jump in and get a good tone in a preset made from scratch.

As an example, if you throw a Reverb block into your preset, usually the defaults are good enough that you want to just adjust the mix a bit. Same for many other effects, so why not Cab block too?

With the previous 0.0 position/distance you had to move each mic a good amount, now you can usually get by with a smaller adjustment so it's a bit faster to use.
It's cool. I don't have a preference personally on a default position. I was just surprised it was a thing. Zeroed out made sense to me.

If you have had any experience placing a microphone(s) on a real amp you will have no problem setting the proper microphone(s) positions on the Dyna Cab microphone emulation. This is even more true when one uses the new Cab Lab 4 software where the microphone(s) can be set anywhere on the face of the speaker.

What’s the usual wait time between Axe firmware and FM firmware? From what I could tell it looks like it was about 1.5 months on the last big update…?

I think it all depends on how much work it takes to port stuff over (much less horsepower to work with, so they obviously have to tighten things up in many cases). They generally are able to bring the really cool stuff to the floor units, though. Gapless switching will be huge, especially for the FM3.
