Dafuq??? Bought a weird amp…

Cost afaik. I think they are a little more expensive. Maybe availability in quantity.

The benefit is supposed to be less size and hum.

Some of the brands/models I know that use them:
  • Bluetone
  • Egnater Tourmaster (interestingly, not on the Renegade, Rebel etc)
  • Fryette LXII
  • Synergy 5050 and SYN-2
  • Laney Ironheart 60/120
  • Stephenson

Interestingly, I believe that cost efficiency is the reason Crab is using them is to help with cost, locally sourced Ukrainian built transformers

It's possible that I'm wrong and these days toroidal transformers actually cost less.

Looked quickly at my local parts dealer and a toroidal transformer suitable for a tube amp was 120 € while a roughly equivalent traditional Hammond was 150 €.

I think that’s likely the case, when I was previously looking into this I saw a lot of discussions from like 2010 or older that toroidal was a more expensive option

I know toroidal transformers are uncommon in guitar amps (AFAIK certain laneys are the only mass produced amps using them in any models?) but I'm not necessarily sure as to why. I can't necessarily see any disadvantages on a surface level at least
Toroidal output transformers are generally frowned upon as any imbalance in the bias currents will cause the core to saturate earlier than a normal E-I core OT. Perhaps they've solved this problem.

Toroidal power transformers are fine.

So that's why pretty much all the amps on my list only use toroidal power transformers.

The Crab amps seem to use toroidal for output transformer as well, but fairly large ones. Almost as big as the power transformer.

Hell yeah! Can’t wait for mine… and lookie here at what I just acquired… gonna be a fun shoot out! lol.
