That’s the loudest I ever got mine in my apartment and even that felt like I was asking for a knock from the neighbors.

I think I was between 1-2. Guy at store also showed 3 to make the point how loud it can get and 3 was obviously too much. With a meter between him and me now the amp was clearly louder than our conversation. Between 1-2 this was not the case.

But it’s clear why a modeler is way way better for home use on normal levels haha with the deluxe it’s questionable if it’s really that quiet. With a modeler it can go from quiet to nicely loud.

Can’t imagine what volume 4-6 would be on that deluxe

5 and up is when the magic happens.

:rollsafe

Yeah … so you would a. Deluxe to keep it at 1-2 … feels a bit like buying a muscle car and just drive 100 km/h where 100 is allowed.

I mean, they still sound great at low volumes. Cranking it to 5 in the living room is probably not ideal though? :rofl
Any tube amp is going to be loud at it's "magical" spot, even a 5watt one in a room. So you either deal with it, turn them down, or get something to scale the power down like an attenuator.

Well .. I do understand the whole “amp in the room” debate now

:puppet

The biggest thing is the speaker besides getting the power section working harder. A lot of speakers need a good amount of volume to open up, unless you get an older one or one with a very low sensitivity rating.

and also “look that was dads old amp” instead of “look that was dads helix”

Ahhhh 3 … so there is a chance that I can get the DR for home.
The thing that's being left out here is that the DR's volume pot taper and amp headroom are such that the amp is approaching its maximum volume at 3. Beyond that, it gets hairier and flubbier. A lot. Louder, not so much.

I used a DR - actually an Alessandro-wired DR - at home for a minute. If you want a really clean sound at bedroom volumes, it can do that. If you want what most people think of as the "glassy Fender clean" (which is anything but clean to my ears), you won't get that at bedroom volumes.

And then back to the modeler? 😄

After nearly 10 years of digital modelling, I've come to the conclusion that it has not been good for either my enjoyment of guitar or my development as a musician. Having endless scope to try different amps with different micromanaged configurations and different IRs was fun and addictive, but it ultimately sucked the soul out of playing for me.

Looking at it now, I find nothing remotely appealing about a digital modeller and FR-FR speakers. These days I plug into nice small 112 tube amps, I turn them up a level so they're loud in the room and I use my Helix as a multi-effects pedal for drives, delay, etc. And I find myself being way happier.

There's no compulsion to tweak, there's no compulsion to adjust, and I never arrive at the conclusion that either the amp or the IR just sound wrong or off somehow. And how could it? The experience is entirely authentic.

Looking at a Supro Keeley or a Fender Deluxe Reverb or a Vox AC-15, there's something real and organic I’m them in a way that an FR-FR will never have. I Probably should have realised this a long time ago, but authenticity and simplicity are far more enjoyable than flexibility and endless options.
