I have so much trouble with those (assuming by 'economy', you mean mixing alt-picking with sweeps.)
This is the beginning lick in the solo of Hit Me With Your Best Shot:

So I want to use economy, because I'm also bad with outside string changes, which you'd get if you alt-picked the whole thing, starting with a downstroke.

So instead, I've tried it using economy... a downstroke rake, then alt for the next notes on the e string. And that leaves me with an upstroke on the note just before the 14 on the B string, so I figure, just use economy there too! Which helps, because then I'm left with 2 inside string changes, which for some reason are way easier than outside.

But the transition between sweeps and alt-picking is so tough for me. It's like, you have to suddenly stop your up/down motion, then do a rake, then right back to alt picking.

I've also tried it with just a sweep to start the lick, then finish it with alt (probably the best way), but part of me is like, I'M GOING TO GET THIS USING ECONOMY, DAMMIT!

4 decades, and this lick still trips me up!

FWIW inside picking is also way easier for me.

As far as sweeping and mixing alternate picking for economy picking goes, what helped me was to first exaggerate stuff think of the seeeps as consecutive rest strokes and make the alternate picking also rest strokes.

Best thing I came across to get better control of seeeps was string skipped sweeps like.

Yeah, descending pentatonic “fives” á la Johnson and Bonamassa.

I economy pick faster runs almost exclusively. Mixing it with alternate picking is my kryptonite, especially when descending.

Oh yeah, I know what you mean. They do a 'mini-sweep' each time they change strings.

is only a rare few use one approach or the other in the strictest of senses.
