Video Games

I tried Nightreign a few times but it’s a bit of a dog’s breakfast – not really good as a rogue-like thanks to the ER map and menu mechanics as well as very few play options other than run like fools with folk you have never played with before to get random items that may or may not assist you if you get to the Nightlord.

Fornite and other rogue-likes at least have a few items, objectives and stuff to keep each run fresh. I haven’t tried the new patch to make single player somewhat reasonable and drops better early items, but I may just never bother.

I can’t see it lasting long. Noobs like me just cannot get started with random co-op and you cannot carry a player through like you can in Soulsborne games. As a Soulslike it just isn’t and as a Rogue-like it has too many ER/Soulsborne mechanics getting in the way as well as it depending so heavily on RNG/loot drops.

IMHO anyway. Others will love it – just for how long remains to be seen.

I've been watching some streams of it and I agree it seems like it will be shortlived fun unless they keep adding more to it. People are already finding "guaranteed" tactics to go through each day where they hit roughly the same spots and skip more annoying bosses or less useful areas.

My big gripe with the game is the building. I wish it wasn't as prevalent but I know some people love it. I'm just not creative 😂
You can do a helluva lot with it, but part of the fun is building something stupid that fails spectacularly. When you make something that works, you add it to favorites until you build something even better.

There are also a few parts that do a lot of heavy lifting. There's a lift railing you can find in the Depths, put in your favorites and have a weirdly lightweight part that makes everything fly really well.

Still obsessed with Nightreign personally

Even bought a second copy on Steam to run with another friend of mine who doesn't have PS5 and we managed to take down two Nightlords in our first session last night

Well over 60 hours in and I've definitely gotten my $40 worth of fun (times two lmao)

Overall I still have 4 Nightlords I've never beaten (three of which I've never even fought at all), still haven't done 95% of the Rememberance quests, and haven't nearly fully explored any of the Shifting Ground quests. Hell there is even still a couple characters I haven't even used once yet, not to mention all the super cool character skins you can get (only gotten one so far)

I honestly don't think watching streams of this game will truly convey what makes it great - the feel of playing it - the planning, the frenetic on the fly risk/reward decisions, the desperation.....not to mention the feeling of finally pulling off a complete hunt. It takes that amazing "holy shit I finally beat this fucking boss after countless attempts" feeling we all love from the souls games and cranks it up to 1000

They've also announced this morning that regular free content updates are coming and the first one is supposed to be this month :love

Those are the reasons I dislike it and have not enjoyed any run through, even when I've made it to Day 3, even with a friend a couple of times.

Planning? How do you plan with Random people with no Chat? Without a map of Limveld to makle a plan? Even 2 of us making a plan does not matter when the 3rd comes in as an Ironeye and dies in close melee combat repeatedly. We had no chance of making it through Day 1!

Players with friends who stream have said how much they liked it - because of who they were playing with (Steelovsky, Ororobro and others).

Just my take - those who enjoy it, do so with glee. I can't see it attracting too many new players over time with the mechanics as is.

After work I just couldn’t face a Nightreign run – and I also can’t face it after I have a beer or two. Neightreign or beer? Guess which wins.

So I fired up ER, poured a nice Belgian Ale and helped a random host with another random co-op go through Belurat from the first grace through to killing the Boss, with a couple of Invaders dispatched along the way at a nice, leisurely pace for most of it. Ah, GG all round! Tasty ale, too.

An hour of frantic panic and hoping for good RNG will only appeal to me on weekend mornings at best. I like Soulsborne games, not Fortnite Lite.

I can't see them doing many free updates and content drops after the inital rush and hopefully some balancing. Fortnite makes money by battlepasses etc.

YMMV

The increased framerate was great, but the resolution didn't do that much.
This applies to all platforms, and even televisions in general. Update frequency trumps resolution whenever things are moving on screen. Resolution stands out when viewing mostly static images.

I’ll take a killer game at 240p over a turd at 4K. Frame drops are a bummer regardless of the resolution.

It depends on the art style. ToTK is almost lo-fi in its aesthetic, and with an emulator you aren't exactly getting higher graphics settings.

Compare this to something highly detailed and resolution will be much more noticeable.

Still, I'd rather games aimed for at least 60 fps even on consoles because that feels so much better to play.

There is a map; you open it immediately as you start while you're still on the eagle and drop your first pin to indicate where you'll head first; others can agree (changes the color of the pin if they do) or if they're going somewhere else they can drop their own pin. It's really not necessary for the entire crew to stick together 100% of the time; as you play and gain more game knowledge you'll be able to identify which locations you can easily solo by level 2

You should essentially be able to form a loose plan for what you want to do within the first ten seconds of starting a match

I do use discord and/or PS voice chat to play with friends but I've also had a lot of success playing with complete strangers with no voice chat

Make no mistake though, the game is incredibly difficult. Even the most godly, perfectly orchestrated run can end in disaster :rofl

Right. I cannot open the map in the hub before matchmaking and starting a run. If I play with a friend we have clear objectives but as soon as we get a third that's usually gone. The one who dropped their pin the ocean to distract us for a few minutes was great fun. Not.

FROM have balanced the solo game a bit so I may try that, but I am hardly the only one online saying it's mid/meh.

Fortnite has a HUD and map system ideal for that style of play. FROM menus and maps are very clunky by modern standards of gaming. In a frantic rogue-like...? I mean, ER was the first time they had a map at all, and it isn't very good.

If you enjoy it, fill your boots! It's not for me is all.

I just saw that Nioh 3 was announced at Playstation State of Play! First big console game I've been excited about in years.

My excitement is only a little tempered by mention of "Deflect, which allows players to block enemy attacks at the last moment..." Nearly every soulslike dev (inc. Team Ninja and FromSoft themselves) has ruined at least one of their games by introducing repetitive, unforgiving parry mechanics and then balancing such that relying on them is the only way to survive. I hope Nioh 3 maintains the exceptional combat mechanics of 1 and 2, perhaps adding a parry/ deflect as a new option.

Anyone picking up the Switch 2? I grabbed one last night, with Mario Kart for the kids. Looking forward to Metroid Prime 4 whenever Nintendo decides to drop it.

I'll def be getting one eventually; just don't think Mario Kart is a big enough reason for me to rush to grab one just yet. I bet it's so fun though :love

I will at some point, although I don't have the cash to pick up now. Maybe I'll wait and see what the verdict is on the unit first.

Got the invite to preorder from Nintendo and jumped on it! I had another preorder from a Finnish retailer but direct from Nintendo ended up being 110€ less for the console and Mario Kart. I got the GameCube controller and carrying case and still saved some money.

It even arrived on launch day! I only had time to set it up so I haven't actually played anything yet. Definitely waiting for Metroid. I hope it's more Prime 1 than 3

Yeah the Nordic distributor jacks up prices a lot, so they can go choke on a dick!

I'm waiting for some "must have" games to be released before considering the Switch 2.
