Video Games

Holy gravelly voice, Batman.

I feel like I'm the only person in the world who didn't "get" Returnal (and during the "ooh shiny new PS5, no other games in sight" phase, I paid full price for it), so I doubt this one will make it into my cart any time soon.

Put jump on L3 and auto run on. Try again.

Auto-run, maybe, but I hate L3 and R3 assigned to anything, just from an ergonomic standpoint. I wish those controls didn't even exist.

(Or is the idea here that you barely ever use jump?)

One of my newest biggest pet peeves is run on L3 (or R3). I'm sitting here trying to sprint away from whatever insurmountably indefeatable baddie pressing down L3 and pushing the L stick forward and my character is responding onscreen by going "humdedum" and moving as if he is stuck in frozen molasses :hmm:hmm:hmm:hmm

GET MOVING ALREADY FFS!
:rofl

Jump on L3 works on Returnal because you don't have to take your thumb off the right stick to press X. Vital in a game as jumpy and shooty as Returnal (and likey Saros).

In every other shooter L3 is run for me. And R3 melee.

I couldn't live without them.

My strategy here is to not play Returnal. Stingy-ass game and everything is grey.

I first realized that the L3/R3 inputs weren't my friend maybe 15 years ago, playing various racing games. I'd be burning around the track wondering who TF was honking their horn at me the whole time. Obviously, it was my own damned horn, assigned by default to R3.

Between work behind a computer, guitar, and video games, I'm somewhat prone to tendinitis. So that whole, "arch your thumb over the handle of the controller and depress at an unnatural right angle" thing doesn't jive. I realize that not everyone is the delicate flower I am. ;)

In the words of Oscar Wilde - "Git gud'.
I appreciate that this is a factor, but a game has to give enough back to make it worth my while. Otherwise, my answer is "no". Returnal just seemed drab, (yes) unforgiving (but in the worst of ways), repetitive, and slowly paced.

ALL OF THAT SAID, I will give it another go once I finish with Nioh 3. (Probably in 9 or 10 years...)

Funny, because I thought the same of Ni-oh.

I use the standard control scheme for Returnal and only turn on auto-run for the Tower of Sisyphus personally

I've got the plat trophy for Returnal which tells you how much time I've sank in to that sucker (the decipher all texts achievement is *literally* pure RNG)

It's easily one of my favorite games of all time so I have big hopes for Saros

I'm so behind on all this potential get annoyed with something fodder :rofl

I know pressing L3 in Dead Space to run is like the most non-reactive control ever. You want to talk about tourettes instigator x infinity :cuss:cuss:cuss

Nioh can get very samey, for sure. But it’s apples and oranges. I’ve never (well, seldom) met a Soulslike I didn’t, um, like. A bullet hell fps has to try a bit harder.

Honestly, yeah @mbenigni I think you are the first I've heard they didn't like Returnal.

Is it the multi-bullet from everywhere aspect mainly?
I dig some bullet hell-ish games (though usually top down 2D stuff, like Hades, Minishoot Adventures, etc.) That wasn't my issue with Returnal; it was more to do with finding the exploration boring and consistently non-rewarding. It's been a few years, though - do I remember correctly that its levels were procedurally generated?

There's a l-o-o-o-o-ng list of games that have been well-reviewed and well-received over the years that I think flat out suck. I'm just an old crank. :idk (Every few years I'll absolutely adore a game that everyone else poops on, too.)
