Van Halen: Live Without A Net

It's hard to overstate how huge an album 5150 was coming on the heels of Roth leaving and no-one knowing
what was going to become of the band.

Hager could really sing (n spite of his habit of always pushing his upper range), was a talented songwriter, and, although he was clearly having a blast, never came across as buffoonish and over the top like Diamond Dave had become by then.
They're totally different and really shouldn't be compared imo. Both are great. Fwiw, I really liked the solo stuff Dave came out with afterwards, even the "Gigolo" and "California Girls" covers. :grin
But it's hard not to love the Hagar VH too. I was only 12 in '86 so those songs were cool to me.

I loved Hagar as much as I loved Roth as a front man, but for stage presence, I’m going to have to go with Roth.

I always look at it as - Roth was a piece of the VH formula, without him it doesn't exist as we know and love. But getting Sammy breathed new life at just the right time too. Not many bands have done that successfully.

Nope!
