to be completely fair, you can definitely also do this with windows laptops

Sure. But many of them will likely throttle in that case, once they get too warm and can't suck in sufficient cooling air anymore. Which simply isn't an issue with the MBA at all (as it just doesn't have any fans), doesn't even get lukewarm in most cases.
