Interestingly, I don't think of flame or quilt tops as being impressive...probably due to my own particular circumstances.
The Jazz crowd in Philly doesn't like solid body guitars no matter what the top looks like (my father called them "planks" and had about as much respect for them as he had for a plank of wood) and my hardcore buddies don't like tops that look "fancy schmancy". With them, a solid black top is much more preferable.
I like the ones I have because I think the wood looks beautiful and I like to look at it myself. For me, it's about how it looks sitting on a guitar stand when I'm at home. Looking at them gives me joy like some who enjoy looking at a fine painting.
But when playing, particularly when playing in front of others, I couldn't care less what the top looks like. At that point I'm just trying to play my best without screwing up.
The thought of them being impressive never crossed my mind.
