Do you prefer 'direct' or 'distant' recordings?

Neither solution delivers the sound of being there; not direct, close nor far...
There are great sounds to be had, yet I, personally, have never been able to repro what I hear in front of the amps with any mic recording set up...like Steven Wilson says "you have to trick it"
therefore, micing for recording is essentially another "effect" the producer has to account for...it has kept me from recording guitar for many years other than direct
thing is, it "should" be possible because typically humans have two ears...technically we "should" be able to reproduce that sound...I just don't find the trickery as enjoyable as being in front of the speakers...so I can't actually represent the multiAmp setup I enjoy...and I just play it
I like at least stereo with two 12" speakers either side...WDW even better
