Tonemission: Is What Does Thing I Dunno TeeHee

Knowing how sensitive mic placement is, unless these IR's were actually captured while recording said albums, the "album accurate" thing is kinda iffy to me. But sounds killer indeed.

You know big bands should do that every time they record an album. Seems like it would be really cool to have an “album” IR for everything you did.

So, I had the opportunity to test drive these this evening. A buddy of mine is a huge Petrucci fan and apparently grabbed them when they were recently on sale.

As expected, they are dark. But I think I know why. These appear to have had high-cuts already applied to them, and from what I can tell, it’s around the 4-5,000 Hz range (not confirmed).

My guess is that John and his engineer intended for these to be mix ready, but for whatever mix they had in mind.

TL;DR: They are dark and might not cut without significant EQ’ing. However, they might work in a three-piece with a single guitar or in an instrumental solo guitar context.

Sitting around noodling over a backing track using a “liquid lead” tone at a higher volume, they sound fantastic.

That’s said, unless you’re a huge Petrucci fan, spend your $80 elsewhere.

That all sounds about right. DT’s mixes since Portnoy has been out of the band start with guitar first, everything else gets mixed under that. :rofl
