Rather than start my own thread, I just wanted to jump into this one again.... my bandmate has a 50-watt Stealth 6L6... and he asked me to take it home for him last night, so I have it at home for about a week or so.

WHAT AN AMP.

Way better than the original 50-watt 5150III; somehow.

The concentric knobs really really make this a great choice for anyone who wants 3 channels without any disadvantages. I might buy one.

It is a killer amp. Shared eq on green and blue are a compromise and it is a bit too high gain. If ther is such a thing :bag But it is a great amp.

Buy one? Dude, you have the amp there already. Just "acquire" it.

Jammed through the Stealth and EVH 112s last night. TIGHT amp. That blue channel is such a mean bark but nowhere near the mid honk of the OG. Both being :satan in their own ways. Red is sizzzzzzzzzzzzle in the right way \m/ I really need to invent a band to use this thing in on it's own. At our wedding soundcheck last weekend; we played the intro through the first chorus of Break Stuff. This would work great for that \m/

Really like the 5150IIIS 50-watter I've been borrowing. I'm gonna pick one up I think. Love the fact it has midi too. No fucking around with other doohickies to get modellers and multi-effects units to switch channels on the amp. The loop is way better than the one on the Dual Recto too.

Do you find there to be any overlap or similarity between Stealth and Badlander?

It is a STELLAR power amp as well, imo. I WISH they made a 100 watter with this same feature set in this size

No. Both are good amps but the BL was much better at doing "lower gain" tones. My idea of "lower gain" duly noted :bag

I wish the el34 EVH interested me. I had it and was immediately turned off by it. It'd be interesting to give it another go and see if I was wrong; if nothing else than to have el34s back in my life. I know there is a mod that helps with something on the blue channel?

Yeah it's a really simple mod that makes the blue channel sound like the 6l6 version. You just snip a connection

How do the el34s impact that tone overall though? Still pretty much ALL preamp tone I am betting. I like the OG blue channel. If the el34s gave it a little bit more goodness; I could gig with that sound with the stuff we do.

One time I had two Laney VH100R's at the same time. One had 6L6's and the other had EL34's.

What I can say for that amp is... the 6L6 version sounded more aggressive, and brighter. It was tighter sounding too, and palm mutes were thunderous. But on the whole it was smooth. There were no offensive frequencies that I can recall.

The EL34's sounded really aggressive too, but in a different way. I recall the amp would sound really in your face and harsh, in a way that the 6L6 one didn't. It wasn't as tight, and was a bit flubby in the lows, but it had its own thing going on.

This shit can be pontificated upon for days and days, and there aren't really any good ways to talk about tube differences. But my experience has been, it does make a difference; to some degree.

Even if the amp is predominantly preamp distortion, the power tubes do colour the tone in a certain way; it can be subtle, but it is there.
