I get hung up in these areas too, often times figuring it out through trial and error until my fingers just start doing what I need them to and it generally involves rolling a finger over to the adjacent string, rather than picking it up and moving it, unless it’s on a different fret. Sweeping was/is a bitch for me due to this.

Ring & pinky share a branching flexor tendon.

Sharing is caring.

This makes a lot of sense, I always feel “late” or disconnected going ring to pinky. I should have known my bitch ass flexor tendon was pulling double duty. :ROFLMAO:

Work this into your practice:

I find it easier to play the 1st 6 bars on the 2nd string though. Really helps "break" that ring/pinky dependence.

I'm in the same boat as you, just started 6 months earlier. Not sure if anyone mentioned it yet even though I read every post in this thread, but I found that my biggest hold up was my picking hand once you reach a point and get a basic understanding of the notes that work 90% of the time and just bend the ones that don't when you land on them by accident, lol...

My biggest challenge so far, and I have been really working on it, is to practice my alternate picking where it comes without thinking about it. Once that is pretty consistent, other things seem to be falling into place better.

Here's day 2. Im not going to get precious about this adventure, there are some real fumble-dick mis-hits here, but I was generally able to survive most of the take without vomitting.

Tried to find a couple patterns in there I could play fast(er) Index - Middle - Pinky style, and added the Today styled pulloff type riff. A little triad action mixed in, which I will say triads give a bit of an anchor, like if you don't know where to go, just find a triad and use that to restart. Unix, I used your pentatonic flow in one part. Used a little of Drews advice mixing in some octaves. I need to remove the whammy bar because I'll sit there and do short bus Lifeson all day long... though I didn't abuse it too much here... though I missed a part entirely by fumbling for it. :bag

Im going to drill the index - middle - pinky, to next string down, index -ring - pinky, tonight. That will allow some linking of parts where I'm just playing static I - M - P at the moment. I need to fix that.

Onward to victory...

This is the best guitar instruction video ever made. Find the handbook for it. If you can get to playing this all the way through you will be able to do anything.

I'll check it out! Always looking for additional ways to get there.

Edit - Here is a website that has the workout in tabs https://www.soundslice.com/slices/7jHcc/

Edit 2 - that website I posted is interactive. Hit the space bar and you are off to the races. I had to slow it down to 80% to get through the first 2 without making any mistakes. This is KILLLER!!

That video made me the man I am today.

I know everyone is different, but how long did it take you to get through all the exercises at speed. This should keep me busy with couch exercises for the next year or two.

I didn’t ever get through it at speed. A lot of it was already pretty easy for me but I really liked the off speed stuff or the triplet then quarter note up/down runs. When you start blasting those with economy picking it adds some layers and sound “tricks” to the layers.

I found the tabs but is there a part of the handbook that gives any of the theory being used?

I made it through three exercises in Rd1 so far. lol

Noice!

I spent an hour + drilling I-R-P and it’s coming around. Still terrible, but better. I also realized that I’m more comfortable with the guitar in classical position. If I buy a footstand my wife is totally going to humiliate me…

Gonna try to find a block of wood or something that I can kick out of the way before anyone can see me.
