TGF Do Something Challenge Season 7 Week 1

I still have work I'm going to do on this, but this is where it stands right now-

Mostly scratch/guide vocal for the main vocal, but there's some usable stuff in there. I might spend more time getting the solo 100%, but Gilmour never will and I'm not bummed with how this came out-

#mic-drop

That’s amazing all the way around. Performance, production. Killer.

That's awesome Drew! Nicely done. I like the mood of the vocal parts, adds a darker flavor to the song which is cool, and you got the lead tone pretty darn close.

Funnily, I gave up trying to nail the solo tone as close as possible, went back to my normal JCM800 Mod Strat preset, put the rotary blocks in place and it was closer than anything I was doing with a Tube Screamer and HiWatt!

Good move. Listening to the original, his tone sounds darker than usual, almost like he has the tone rolled back a lot, unless he's also using a flanger in freeze mode to filter in a particular way?

I don’t even think it’s a Strat, it doesn’t have the single coil sound at all. I thought flanger at first, because it’s kind of reminiscent of his Animals/The Wall tones, that icy/almost chorus sound, but I think it’s the Yamaha RA-200 rotating speaker cab. He’s got it on tour with him and listening to the solo you can kinda hear that tube-y/round sound they tend to do.

I was looking at Yamaha RA-200’s this morning on Reverb, they aren’t crazy expensive!

You think it's the LP? Could be.
I have a rotating baffle I got from my Grandma's old Lowrey organ. I retrofitted it into an old record player/stereo piece of furniture my wife got from her mother. It was shot so I thought the rotating would be cool to incorporate into it. Mounted it into the center of the cab, so the sound will radiate to each side of the cab openings where the former L and R speakers used to be. I use a variac to control the AC hitting the transformer wired to the baffle and use the stock speaker from the organ. Put a power jack and speaker input on the back. I can run a small tube or ss amp into it. Pretty cool and sounds great! I need to record with it soon.

OK, before I get called out for not contributing anything this week, here is my first ;~))

Every time I play, I spend the first 5-10 minutes just playing through my Preset Scenes on my Axe FXIII to warm up strings, fingers and ensure all is tracking/sounding proper to my ears. Simple CAGED chord stuff, with a simple beat I kick on my cajon. I used to call this stuff "SUAPYG" (Shut Up And Play Your Guitar) and had also titled it "8 Growls" but have now settled on the name "The Daily Growl". So here is my Daily Growl for Sept. 27, 2024 ;~)) I will classify this as a #hot-noodle, though it is way less than the hotness most members post here ;~)) Click on image or link below image to play mp3 file.

Next up is a classic from The Led Zeppelin! "Rock & Roll" no less!! This is my simple "I can't play lead guitar" version of this number ;~)) Just started playing it recently and I am LOVING it, so fun to play!!! This is a take from Friday Sep 27, 2024. All parts played live on cajon, PRS 594 HBII through Axe FXIII and Rode NTR mic. Minimal post production (as I am sure you can tell)! #cover-song

Now this song is NOT ready for prime time, but that is part of what I consider this challenge to be about, trying something new. I played this song for the first time on September 23, 2024 (Monday of this week) and this was take 2 from today. I think I have played it maybe a dozen times so far so still a lot to work out and plenty of mistakes here of all varieties, but BOY am I havin' a blast playing this one! Been listening to it for decades and always loved it ;~)) I will get better at it and post an update in the Directors Cut thread when it is to a place I really want to get it to, but for now I wanted to enter it as a #cover-song for the challenge largely because it is very new to me, from first time play this week to posting as far as I got during week one of Challenge 7 ;~)) So here is my challenged (pun intended) rendition of "Queen B!tch" from David Bowie off the "Hunky Dory" album (1971) ;~))

EDIT (November 6, 2024): I have swapped out the copy this was pointing to for the original challenge entry. This now points to a Youtube video I created for a newer version of this song!
