Struggling to Nail Early EVH Tones with EVH 5150 Iconic Series Amp

Also with the smaller one may want to upgrade speaker to a GreenBack 10 inch version. Not expensive and easy upgrade.

But here where you could do a lot with what your after especially earlier sounds with that amp and an EQ. I think Eddie used an MXR 6 Band for early stuff so I would suggest less gain and using that to dial in.

The New ones are a song and for what they do are great and you can do so much with a little and small foot print. New ones are also less noisy than vintage ones and come with a footswitch.

Also as someone else said your not going to sound like EVH exactly as much as you want to try.....

As Buddy Guy said once you have to make it your own and he's one of the best and his advice on learning a song.

This was not a thread about making it your own.
You can copy Ed but almost any humbucker and a Marshall is all the gear you need. The rest is nailing the nuances. When I met Ed we both played through a bunch of plexis with Ed’s guitar and he sounded like him and I sounded like me. It’s an important lesson. I can get closer to Ed’s tone by holding my pick with my middle finger that changing the humbucker.

First video in post #2 of this thread blew my mind with all of the Eddie nuances he nailed.

Weren’t we just talking about this albeit a different amp?Lol

And here with the little SV20!

When the SV20 was released I tried one into a 4x12". I can do a decent EVH on a good day and the music store dude couldn't believe his own ears when I cranked it to 10 and played a few VH riffs, he had no idea that this amp could do that... :grin

Years ago I bought 2 Bugeras, a 1960I & 1990I. This is when they were $400 a piece at Sweetwater.

I remember coming across some sound bites of this guy getting a killer “brown sound” out of that Plexi clone. You should have heard him play and the tones were keeler. Peeps were taken aback on that forum thread listening to that 1960I sound like that.

I can picture that music store dude reacting like we all did.:headbang

You can play man.

Cool man. I like that!

These come biased really cold. I rebiased mine to 33mv. Kept the JJ GC’s and changed preamp tubes to EH 7025’s. Quiet some hiss down. Same gain. Biggest change was putting in a Cream 90. Tried an Alnico Gold and V30 which were good too. I do not like the 40 watt EVH speakers. That’s just my ears.

I stay on the green OD voicing and set it like a JCM800 that actually has gain. Don’t usually get past 11am for hard rock stuff. Also put boost on always set at zero. Pushes the front with a 8 or 10db amount of boost. Lil tidbit from the designer JB.
