Private teacher online

How does this work?

I am digital pretty handy so don’t see a problem there. But I wonder, is the sound ever an issue? Does the teacher even see you or only your guitar (webcam focus)?

How do you jam together?

What are fair prices. I see Guthrie trapp prices (250 per lesson) to 60-85 per private lesson.

I think I am considering it because I might be able to find a really good teacher instead of the local guys here where I live.

Any names?

I've been teaching online pretty much exclusively for the past few years. The inherit latency of a Zoom or Google Meet call makes jamming together pretty much impossible unfortunately. Preparing some backing tracks that you can take turns playing over or having charts to work through is a great alternative.

A few things that generally make things run smoother;
- Wired internet connection.
- A webcam (or phone you can use as a webcam) along with some direct lighting on your guitar.
- Audio interface & headphones.

No judgement / honestly curious

What do you do with students if playing together is no option?

IIRC you did a video using the Elk audio interface at some point. Have you continued any of those explorations with low latency online collaborative tools?

Obviously most students probably wont spring for that due to cost, but I’m still holding out hope that this becomes more of a widespread technology moving forward - hopefully encouraging other manufacturers to join the space and drive down costs.

I’d be much more likely to engage in online sessions if we ever reliably conquer the latency conundrum.

I just use my iPhone over WiFi right now. The latency thing is there and sometimes there’s a cutting out when we both talk.

The important part is finding someone that can hear what you’re playing. Last lesson i was playing improvised chords for a song and my teacher said “why did you put a flat 7 there”. I said “tritone substitution” and then we argued about why I’d call it that. 😄

Ooh, I’ve got a new argument for him now. BRB.

How i would set it up is with the HX stomp as audio interface.

Zoom has the option to select microphone so maybe it will need to be an external mic plugged into the stomp.

Don’t think my webcam could handle what comes out of my monitors.

I got some very usable results for remote rehearsals (sub 20ms latency) but that's within the same city. They released a version that didn't require their hardware but they've now folded which is a massive shame. The servers were still up the last time I checked though.

I'm a patreon of Ben Eller and I've had a couple of web-cam lessons so far.

Make sure you wear pants though... he's kinda funny about that.
