Philip Sayce - the wonderful Strat sound

It’s my birthday today so I am giving myself permission to ask one extra stupid question.

Would you recognize it if Philip Sayce (or any player well known for Strat) would play a Telecaster?

Audio only for the smart asses besides us.

How many people thought Gilmore recorded Comfortably Numb Another Brick in the Wall with a Strat?
(It was a Les Paul)

How many people thought Joe Perry recorded early Aerosmith with a Les Paul?
(It was a Strat)

How many people thought Jimmy Page recorded early Led Zepplin with a Les Paul?
(It was a Tele)

And happy birthday!

In an an alternative universe the Birmingham plumber David Gilmore may have recorded a song called Comfortably Numb with a Les Paul, but in the real world it was recorded by David Gilmour with his black strat... :hmm

Happy birthday! @mercifulfuzziness

I had read that the solo was actually recorded with a gold top LP with p90s

As for the OP; I’d imagine that Sayce is a Strat guy enough that if he were to play a Tele, it’d be because he’d want it to sound like a Tele. Which is a bit different than say some metal guys getting into the studio and someone says “We need some clean guitar overdubs on this, grab a Strat or a Tele, whatever has single coils and get it done”

I have both but i wouldn’t be able to tell you what makes the Strat a Strat and a Tele a Tele. You?

Well, there’s tones you expect you can get out of a Strat and tones you expect to get from a Tele, there’s definitely some areas they merge at, especially at the bridge pickup, but if I started breaking things into “less bassy, more bite”, there’s all that room for “Just turn up the bass or treble”.

I think a lot of what makes a Tele a Tele is due to the bridge that, at best, you’d have to deck a Strat’s trem to get close to. There’s definitely a different kind of attack the notes have with a Tele that ‘soften’ as a result of springs giving a bit on a Strat, you can get a bit more ‘punch’ or whatever adjective you want to throw in there that people can debate about all day long.

There’s also the vibe aspect that I freely admit influences me when making guitar choices. I could get Les Paul tones out of any of my humbucker guitars all day long, but when I got the itch for a Les Paul, only a Les Paul was going to cut it!

A Strat feels a bit more fancy and cool. The Tele as a workhorse. But must admit: I am never at the bridge at either one

Hahahhaha it’s hard getting away from the neck pickup! I wouldn’t even be all that mad if the only good sound my Strat had came from the neck pickup because it’s a really good sound!

Fully agree. It’s the best sound there is. And I also love the neck from the Tele. And then it’s not miles apart. But still feel more like a Strat man than a Tele man.
